Q&A: Benny Gold

Occupation and Position.
I am a freelance designer working and living out of San Francisco. I have been fortunate enough to work with clients such as Huf, Mash, Stussy, Burton, The Hundreds, Nike, Ipath, and DVS.

What neighborhood/city do you closely identify with? What makes your community so unique?
I live in San Francisco. I have always identified with the city even when I did not live here. I watched early skate videos and Mike Carroll would use Hieroglyphics and other local artist in his part. I wanted to be out here so bad that I would imitate the slang from the songs to feel closer to SF.

What’s the greatest item that you’ve dug up at a local garage/estate sale? How much did it cost?
I never really have luck at those things. I was at this one with my friend Johnny and I am digging in this pile and all of a sudden he gets super excited and pulls up this carbon spoked zip front bicycle wheel. He rushes off to buy it for $50. I was super bummed. To think I was only one pile of crap off from finding that wheel. Every time him and I ride together I look at that wheel and think how lucky he was that day.

If you could interview one unsung hero, who would it be? Why?
I will always be a Hosoi fan. He was my first hero in life. I had the chance to meet him skating in LA once and I totally geeked out and told him how much he meant to me when I was growing up. He was super cool – thanks Holmes.

What’s your favorite youtube video?
Neil Blender – real street style 1986

Where are your favorite local spots to eat?
I have been really into Popalotes Mexican Restaurant. They have a great Soyrizzo burrito.

What are your favorite local nightlife scenes?
I live in the Mission District of the city and all my friends live close so any bar with them is fun. My friends host Cold Blood on the first Saturday of every month at Casanova – that is the best.

What songs are at the top of your playlist at this very moment?
I keep the playlist on shuffle non stop. I just checked it and Black Uhuru is playing – Puff she puff. Black Uhuru is so classic. Anything produced by Sly and Robbie!

10. What new projects you are building on right now?
I am finishing up a new logo for the site Highsnobiety. Hopefully their new site will be updated with the logo by the time you read this. Now I need to get the files ready for the printer for my Spring / Summer 08 line.
