Slow And Steady Wins The Race

Slow and Steady Wins the Race is a new clothing label, presented as a bimonthly clothing diary, cataloguing ideas that are focused on a specific and fundamental characteristic of clothing design. With each issue, Slow and Steady Wins the Race intends to slowly open the cap on a more democratic dissemination, promotion and appreciation of clothing. The mission of the label is to push and produce interesting and significant pieces from the simplest and most inexpensive fabrics and materials.

Creative Recreation – Italian Collection Model: Corozzo

Creative Recreation is proud to introduce their highest tier product yet, The Italian Collection. One should note the new top notch quality cupsole. Some of you might have seen this similar cupsole in the footwear collections of Lanvin, Margiela, Raf Simons and Kris Van Assche. Creative Recreation is finding themselves in quite good company. This particular model is the Corrozo, a nice interpretation of a high top meets a moon boot. The two velcro straps add a dimension that goes well with the heightened tongue. Once again, one more example of Creative Recreation’s role entering the high end sneaker market.

Los Mirlos  – “Sonido Amazonico”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

What you are listening to right now is the long lost classic from the Peruvian Amazon entitled, “Sonido Amazonico” by the chicha band, Los Mirlos. There are few compilations that can truly embody the spirit of a musical movement as arcane as 70’s psychedelic cumbia. Yet Olivier Conan, founder of Barbes records, unearthed some gems from his travels and accomplished just that with his release of The Roots of Chicha, a critically acclaimed compilation that’s having every DJ talking about it.

Stuart Cooper: Overlord

My Celluloid Fix: Overlord
Britain’s Imperial War Museum
(1975)

Overlord is one of my favorite films in the genre of wartime cinema–a brooding meditation on the destructive forces behind war. It is directed by Stuart Cooper, who initially intended on directing a documentary that would commemorate the soldiers who fought in the historic D-day battle. But when he rifled through the amazing footage of British soldiers training and the startling barrage from fighter planes, he felt compelled to tell his own fictional story, a third of which was made of actual archival material.

Nirvan Mullick: The Box Man

This critically acclaimed short, The Box Man , was completed by Nirvan Mullick in 2002 and had garnered several awards and honors. The story is based off the novel (of the same name) penned by the master of Japanese modern literature, Kobo Abe, whose dark existential world and absurdist humor about urban living makes him a cut above the rest. Utilizing stop-n-go animation, Mullick fashioned veiled characters against a dark urban backdrop cloaked in shadows. He combines these elements with the perfect blend of suspense and finishes the film with an eerie, neo-noir twist. Enjoy!

Thom Browne & Running

Thom Browne looks at mens fashion from a very practical point of view, this is partly the reason why I enjoy his clothing. Yet at the same time, here’s a man that jogs every day in Central Park, eats breakfast at the same Diner every day and cuts his hair at a traditional barbershop. He was once quoted as saying that a man should not spend more than $30.00 on a hair cut. And yet his suits command the prestigious cost of $5,000.00. It is the eccentricities of the man that makes him a great designer.

Sly Street, Union Square

A man with great personal style and class, he was completely helpful in my pursuit to capture his outfit in the best of my abilities. He is the one that suggested this location that served as a perfect backdrop to his magnificent ensemble. I look forward to running into him again.
