Q&A: Letitia Ivins

Occupation and Position.
Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Civic Art Coordinator

What neighborhood do you closely identify with? What makes it so unique to you?
Northeast Koreatown, aka Historic Filipinotown, aka El Salvado Pequeno. It’s a fusion, it’s in flux, it’s freak-filled as well as family-friendly. It is also uniquely close to a metro making me a lucky commuter!

What’s the greatest item that you’ve dug up at a local garage sale? How much did it cost?
A miniature mint green plastic piano toothpick (or slender joint?) dispenser. $

What’s your favorite youtube video?
cute girl

and

Human Tetris

Where are your favorite local spots to eat?
Chichen Itza: BEST Yucatan in town and great environs in their new MacArthur Park restaurant.

Suriyo Thai Bistro – on their rooftop that seems surprisingly little known. It’s perfect for a summery dinner at dusk. The sunset, the pad see ew and the larb kick the thai town competitor’s ass! Sa Wa Dee KA!

Scoops down my street. Current faves: pistachio fig and Guiness Chocolate

Madame Matisse – The fastest, friendliest, freshest, and most filling brunch fix on this side of the 101!

What are your favorite local nightlife scenes.
A dinner party at a friend’s house with spontaneous dancing

What songs are at the top of your playlist at this very moment?
I’m super out of touch with current music, so admittedly, Liz Phair, X-Ray Spex (I Can’t Do Anything), King Sunny Ade, Love Joys, Sleater Kinney – how embarrassing, so 90s!, and Lord Ekomy Ndong with Sally Nyolo

What new projects you are building on right now?
An Allan Kaprow reenactment/happening with MoCA and Outpost for Contemporary Art (www.outpost-art.org) at Quail Lake, Metal forming techniques in jewelry-making, commissioning public art for LA County-funded capital projects, and an Outpost/Eagle Rock Center for the Arts project called “Intersections” in Highland Park where artists will create temporary installations in York Boulevard businesses this summer. Establishing an Emerging Arts Leaders/Los Angeles Network with a taskforce of 10 other young arts professionals.

  1. I be missin the “Northeast Koreatown, aka Historic Filipinotown, aka El Salvado Pequeno” days – but not circling for parking only to end up in front of One Eye Jack.
