Q&A: Melissa Magsaysay

Occupation and Position.
Fashion Market Editor/Assistant Editor- Los Angeles Times

What neighborhood do you closely identify with? What makes it so unique to you?
Venice. I don’t live there, but wish I did. It’s got a great sense of culture and community. Great restaurants and shops, but relaxed. Not flashy. Feels far away from the stuff I do and deal with every day in West Hollywood.

What’s the greatest item that you’ve dug up at a local garage sale? How much did it cost?
Worn in blue hooded sweatshirt with the sleeves cut off. My friend and I had a garage sale and she was selling it. She was going to a bachelorette party that night and needed a present. I happened to be selling a bikini area trimmer that I had received in some random gift bag. I told her I would trade her the bikini trimmer for the blue sweatshirt. Done deal. We both won… but I wear that sweatshirt all the time. I’ve seen things just like it recently at j.crew for like $60 and they’re just not as good.

If you could interview one unsung hero, who would it be? Why?
Ramon Magsaysay, my great uncle and former president of the Philippines. He was a great leader and has an amazing legacy that a lot of Filipino people know about, but not too much here in America. He has his own American stamp and cover of Time Magazine… and did a lot of great things for the Philippines and for America as an ally. He knew a lot about making peace with terrorist organizations and rebels, without a raging war. He was a great negotiator. That would be an important person to have right now to maybe patch up our foreign relations.

What’s your favorite youtube video?
Haven’t watched anything on there in awhile, but the “Hipster Olympics” was really funny… ’cause it’s so true. Sad, but true.

Where are your favorite local spots to eat?
M café, Lucques, Mani’s, Yabu Sushi, Pace.

What are your favorite local nightlife scenes?
My couch on Wednesday nights 10-11pm – Top Chef on Bravo. And Palihouse.

What songs are at the top of your playlist at this very moment?
When summer rolls around, it’s all about the top-40 summer jams — nothing too heavy or deep… Case in point: Ray Jay “Sexy Can I”, Estelle and Kanye West “American Boy”, M.I.A.. It’s the only thing makes driving in L.A tolerable — summer jams and a hot day with the windows down.

What new projects you are building on right now?
LA Times… lots to do. Hollywood Arts — I teach there once a week — creative arts to homeless youth in Hollywood. Working on the “Dream Awards”, the program’s biggest fundraiser. Also, working with the kids on developing their own t-shirt line.
