TRANSFER Art Exhibition

TRANSFER
Porto Alegre – BRAZIL
***
North-American subcultures like punk/hardcore, hip hop, graffiti and skateboarding were exported to various countries via movies, magazines and other Medias. Brazilian kids first tried to emulate the music, art and tricks from those subcultures, but soon realized that was impossible due to economic and material difficulties and cultural differences. It didn’t stop them to adapt everything, from materials to attitude, creating new branches for this American-turned-global new urban culture. Now Brazilian artists with urban roots and skateboarders are getting international recognition, mostly by the new flavor they’re adding

Shaun the Sheep: “Still Life”

What you are watching is a delightfully charming episode starring Shaun the Sheep, an award-winning series from Aardman animations.  Christopher Sadler, the U.K. director, employed meticulously detailed and colorful claymation reminiscent of Wallace & Gromit.  For those who are as big of a fan of Nick Park as I am, it should interest you to know that Still Life was originally conceived by the talented animator. Sadler uses an interesting technique of replacing the spoken language with goofy facial expressions, onomatopoeic rigmarole, and hilarious barnyard antics to drive the story to new comedic heights.  A rollicking good time that will leave you in stiches!

MGMT – “Electric Feel”

Please enjoy this psychedelic gem from MGMT (formerly known as Management) directed by Ray Tintori. The space-psych duo hailing from Brooklyn, New York are shown here playing their hit track, “Electric Feel,” off their latest album, Oracular Spectacular (Columbia Records.) The video captures all the synth-pop allure and psychotropic magic of a rainbow-prismed swamp on acid including an animatronic band from Chuck E. Cheese.  And although this music video has been circulating the rounds since its early summer release, we wanted to bring back this fantasy dance video for another spin at the EM office.

ANP QUARTERLY

RVCA is an example of how a sport brand fuses culture in a very organic method. Founded by the love of surf, the brand began within the action sports category and now is involved from anything ranging from track bikes, to UFC fighting, to the arts, and to of course surf and skate. I recently came across their recent release of ANP Quarterly, RVCA’s very own printed publication discussing the arts in a candid yet informative manner.

Apnée

Apnée is about the chilling few seconds of a paparazzi who tried to catch an embarrassing snapshot of a public figure. A momentary decision that unwittingly leads to certain dire consequences. This uber-sleek animated short by director, Claude Chabot, recounts this split-second disaster utilizing CG images to create grand, sweeping camera angles and smooth transitions.

The Linguists

David and Greg are “The Linguists,” who document languages on the verge of extinction. In the rugged landscapes of Siberia, India, and Bolivia, their resolve is tested by institutionalized racism and violent economic unrest.

Amie Dicke & assume vivid astro focus

“aqui volvemos adornos frivolos” and “Passive Drifter”
Peres Projects – Berlin
Event: 9/20/08

***
Javier Peres is pleased to start off the fall season with solo shows by Amie Dicke and assume vivid astro focus. For her fourth solo exhibition with Peres Projects, “Passive Drifter,” the Dutch artist Amie Dicke will present an installation of new sculptures and framed works. Never falling prey to the often literal approach of “political art”, Amie’s works instead turn the constant hum of Europe’s shameful cultural and political past into an enabling violation – an aesthetic game that turns classical imagery and often found antique objects on its head and leaves Amie with a rich visual vocabulary all her own. Amie Dicke (b. 1978 Rotterdam, the Netherlands) lives and works in Amsterdam and will be present for the opening.
