Ever since my neighbor got bit by a Brown Recluse, I’ve begrudgingly killed every spider in sight. And although a healthy chunk of flesh had to be amputated from my neighbor’s thigh, she healed up nicely and moved far away; leaving us with our new anxiety.  Due to the impending heat, many unwanted spiders cast shadows on my bedroom walls. If the cats don’t catch them, I most certainly will. Really the only group of arachnids welcomed in my home these days are the 60’s Japanese band, the Spiders. This song, “No No Boy”, in my opinion, is their finest work . Usually imitating the early Beatles’ aesthetic, almost to a fault, this unique track strays off from their standard fare into a more dreamy surf number, complete with the bending notes of a whammy bar, melodic bass lines, and soothing vocals.

For a little history on the band, it was the summer of 1964 when the Liverpool Five finally came to Japan creating a cultural ripple effect.  That was when a group of Japanese youths began their group dubbed the Spiders.  They were influenced by British beat bands, as well as a European-pressed Beatles album given to them by one of their friends. The album influenced them so much, they decided to morph their band into a vocal beat combo.
