DEVO HISTORIC HOMECOMING RALLY Akron Civic Theatre - AKRON, OHIO 10/17/08!!! *** In the last month of this historically crucial presidential race, the band DEVO is making an urgent trip to their hometown of Akron, Ohio. Here they rally for the Summit County Democratic Party, showing their strong support for Barack Obama in this important battleground state. Largely considered a Republication stronghold, as no republican has ever won the Oval Office without winning the state of Ohio .
All four founding members (Mark Mothersbaugh, Bob Mothersbaugh, Gerry Casale and Bob Casale) of the band, two sets of brothers, were born and raised in Akron Ohio. The Band was considered "groundbreaking" with hits such as "Gates of Steel", "Freedom of Choice" and of course, "Whip It" which became an '80s anthem. During a period when there was a sea of new wave and punk bands, Devo pioneered their own original blend of political pop lyrics, iconography and never before heard electronic instrumentation that garners them a place in music history and continues to influence countless bands today.
Although all four band members now reside in Los Angeles, California, they all maintain family ties in Northeastern Ohio. When asked about the decision to make the trip to Ohio as opposed to rallying in California, Mark Mothersbaugh, the band's frontman had this to say; "Ohio is where we need to be" says Mothersbaugh. "My wife Anita convinced me of that after we had attended yet another Obama event here in California. It's great that we are all for Obama but sitting around in our BLUE bubble doesn't do anything for Obama in the battleground states. We all have a vested interest in what happens here - our families and friends that have been hurt by the nonsense of the past eight years. We hope to make some kind of impact with this concert and raise consciousness to what's happened in Ohio in the past and what will happen again if people are not made aware of what their vote means. At a time when our country is struggling under the burden of the unrestrained greed and political blunders of the current administration, we need a presidential team that can pilot us out of this mess. I think that Barack Obama and Joe Biden are our only hope - that's why we are here."
Gerald V. Casale, Mothersbaugh's co-writer and founder of the band (both met at Kent State) adds this about the trip back to Akron; "DEVO is excited to be "Bringin' it all back home". This is our birthplace, Akron Ohio. This is the most important election in presidential history and most experts agree that Ohio is the key to winning it. FREEDOM OF CHOICE is the title of our most successful record - it's what America is all about. We're honored to help raise money for the Democratic Party and awareness for Barrack Obama's candidacy. By restoring democracy, Barack Obama will make sure that Freedom of Choice remains what this country is all about".
The Akron-based, Black Keys are opening as well as a few surprise guest musicians for DEVO. Mark will be bringing a short video edited by Shepherd Fairey. It is comprised of different 30-second soundbites of different artists discussing about this election/Obama/voting means to them. The DEVO boys hit the Akron Civic Theatre on Friday, October 17th with their "Duty Now for the Future" show. Borrowing the title from one of their own albums. All proceeds will go to the Summit County Democratic Party and there will be a reception with the band for VIP ticket holders.
Reserved seats are available for $25, $35, and $50 tickets. A limited number of VIP tickets, which include a post show reception with the band, are available for $150.
