Icelandic artist Katrin Olina studied industrial design at Paris’ E.S.D.I. before gaining her bearings at both Philippe Sarck and Ross Lovegrove. Since then she has bounced around the globe working in Reykjavik, Switzerland and Helsinki collaborating on projects as diverse as interior design, graphics and vinyl toys. Recently Olina was tapped by the Cristal Bar in Hong Kong to design the interior of their newly built space. Using 3M film and print technology, Olina designed a seamless painting that spanned the over 1200 feet of space. Layering the bar top with close to 300,000 Swarovski crystals, a ripple projector placed above the bar and LED lights below create a shimmering wave effect that changes colors throughout the course of the night.
A truly ambitious undertaking, Olina created an environment where patrons can expect to feel completely immersed. Her ethereal designs paired with lighting specifically created to make the graphics appear to be changing colors generates a heightened sense of depth for her imagery and the overall aesthetic appeal.
