Claw Money x Starter

To be completely honest with you, I don’t really get all of the hype behind NYC graf artist Claw Money. Sure I appreciate that she was one of the first female writers to really break in with the boys, as well as being the first woman to collaborate on a shoe with Nike and for all of that I willingly give credit where credit is due. However as a “designer” I feel her skills leave a bit to be desired. Nothing from her line is really breaking out of what every other female oriented streetwear line is trying to do, whether it’s yet another cutsie slogan tee or a zip up logo hoodie. However, where I will commend Ms. Money is for her innovation on a recent collection of vintage Starter Jackets. I have always been a fan of reusing and reworking items into a completely different medium or, as in this case, simply reconfiguring them in the same genre with an entirely new outcome.

Now where slapping some patches on vintage jackets isn’t exactly rocket science, what Ms. Money did tap into was a the culture’s incessant need for the most exclusive, the most limited piece and when it comes right down to it can you get more limited than a previously owned jacket from the early 90’s with the original owner’s name still hand-scrawled across the tag? Uh-huh, think not.

  1. You obviously don’t get it at all. Not only was CLAW$ the first FEMALE to do a Nike; she was the first FEMALE to do a streetwear line period! All these other brands such as MOB, Hellz, Dime Piece and Mama- take their cues and inspiration from her! Get it right - she was the first, has the most credentials and is the true originator. Wake up!

  2. i give her credit for ALL of that, and don’t deny the fact that what she has done has paved the way for the multitude of women’s streetwear lines that are peaking their heads in the game now. i guess what i was trying to convey was that i see potential for the line to be even MORE than it is and am enjoying seeing her reach out into arenas that the other lines aren’t attempting. i wasn’t trying to discredit what she’s done and what she’s doing, i just want to see things pushed even further than they are now, cos i know they can be.
