In the best case scenario, getting undressed takes two to tango. But sometimes pulling yourself together requires a little more help from your friends. Luckily, Di Mainstone, a graduate of Central Saint Martins and Banff New Media Institute, knows a thing or two about collaborative effort.
In her latest project with the Institute for Unstable Media V2, she created Sharewear, a performance art that gives everyone a piece of the Haute Tech action. In a playful display of intimate dress, the audience watches as two crates are unpacked and then pieces assembled in real time, slotting magnetic foam blocks together to create two reconfigurable, electronic garments. Levers and pulleys hide within the fabric encouraging exploration, and personal lamps establish all sorts of moods. But in this fashion investigation it’s best to know your audience. After all, thanks to Mainstone, slipping on something more comfortable just became a team sport.
