Topshop Holiday 2008 Lookbook

The ever inventive and fast paced British powerhouse Topshop continues to impress and inspire fashionistas around the globe with the arrival of their 2008 Christmas Lookbook.

Projecting from each shot is dark punk inspired glamour. Models are styled with lips painted in shades of black orchids to crushed rose petals with cut off leather gloves against a backdrop of dusky purple and mahogany interiors. With looks divided into groups of Punk Couture to Pagan, the Lookbook’s overall aesthetic is entrenched with influences ranging from Victoriana, 70’s luxe, 80’s glamour, and 20’s Flapper Girl topped with an immortal rock n’ roll attitude.

Each look is incredible with their rich usage of shape and texture through the novelty of patterned sequins, plumes of feathers, playful polka dots, bold mettallics, come-hither point d’espirit and tailored suiting through a moody palette highlighted with wise pops of color. It is rare to have a line at these price points offering a complete head to toe look including my favorites of lacey stockings paired with ruby red Dorothy platforms and a sequined frock. It is no wonder that Topshop has successfully executed these key Gothic and Punk trends that have dominated catwalks in recent seasons, as London has become the new fashion capital of all that is hip and cool with the likes of Agness Deyn, Gareth Pugh, Alexander McQueen and international fashion icon Kate Moss calling it home.

As a girl’s dream come true, these looks have the ability to transform any wardrobe to that of a coveted downtown “it” girl status. What makes this collection wholly saleable and consumer friendly is its ability to be broken down into separates catering to a customer that wants something a little special to pair with more of an “everyday” look, and for the bold, the ultimate “it” statement of the season.

  1. Gotta love the stockings!

  2. mmm love topshop. i can’t wait until the ny store opens in spring. my obsession with topshop/topman goods continues to this day.

  3. Personally I think H&M does it better. Topshop is a ok but H&M takes the prize for providing high end items at low cost. Don’t you agree?

  4. I would agree that H&M does takes the prize in providing fashion to the mainstream but I would not call it high-end. If anything, I would consider Topshop to be on the higher end by design if that makes sense.

  5. Well it depends on how you define high-end. If anything I think both Topshop and H&M are cheaply made clothes attempting to appease the contemporary fashion scene, who in themselves are attempting to cater to the high fashion crowd. It’s this notion of aspiration that drives these two large conglomerate to do what they do. They democratize fashion trends to a larger mass. Sometimes I wonder why Gap doesn’t wake the fuck up and see what their fellow competitors like Topshop (UK), H&M (Sweden) and Uniqlo (Japan) are doing. I would say J.Crew are the only ones who understand the market slightly better. Their bar boutique in New York is pretty stellar.

  6. I was simply stating that Topshop would be on the higher end of the scale compared to H&M, that is all. I wasn’t defining or considering either to be high-end.

  7. H&M and TOPSHOP both are going after the same space. But my hats go to H&M because Karl Lagerfeld is the man.

  8. Topshop is unique because of their ability to cater to a high-end fashion crowd at moderate prices with very item based styles mixed with trendy basics. The GAP has attempted to reach this status in the past, but with difficulty with their “basics” focused merchandise. Their past stints included reinterpreting the classic white shirt with Designers such as Thakoon, Doo.ri and Rodarte in their own signature silhouettes. In our current economic state, stores are continuing to sell items that have novelty to them and Topshop is hitting that nail right on the head. H&M is getting right back up there as well with their recent launch of their collaborative effort with Commes Des Garcons.

And might I add that yes….Karl Lagerfeld does rock :)
