Q&A: Nirvan Mullick

nirvan_bus EM:  Occupation and Position MULLICK: Filmmaker & Social Entrepreneur Director of The 1 Second Film project and The Collaboration Foundation EM: What neighborhood do you closely identify with? What makes your community so unique? Downtown Los Angeles. I've been living here for about 4 years. It's very diverse, and the homelessness is in your face, which keeps you from forgetting about it. There is a lot going on downtown, and so many strange secret spaces filled with interesting people doing interesting things. I live in an industrial area, and love that we don't have street cleaning. I have a converted school bus that I can keep parked without too much hassle. EM:  What's the greatest item that you found at your local garage/estate sale? Probably my biggest score was a pre-iTunes find of Jack Wagner's "All I Need" on vinyl for 25 cents. My grandmother, sister and I watched a lot of General Hospital when I was a kid, and that song still holds up. EM: If you could interview one unsung hero, who would it be? Why? Hmm, my first thought was Muhammad Yunis, but he won the Nobel prize. So maybe Tim Berners-Lee, one of the guys who invented the internet while at CERN. Talk about making a worldchanging impact. I'm wondering if there has been one specific moment during the evolution of the internet that really stands out for him. I would also like to get some of the behind the scenes science gossip. EM:  What's your favorite youtube video. Ninja cat: Or Wingsuit Mountain Swoop And on a personal note, we raised $7,000 in 3 days for The 1 Second Film after this video got featured: EM:  Where are your favorite local spots to eat? Downtown, there is a little Vietnamese place in Chinatown with really good $3 Vietnamese sandwiches. I don't know the name, so I guess that's not very useful. It's on the first floor of that open shopping center on the west side of Broadway just south of College. Farther from home, I love India Sweets & Spices next to the MJT in Culver City. EM: What songs are at the top of your playlist at this very moment? Bon Iver's "Stacks" Beirut's "Forks and Knives" The Evangenitals "Ode to Scientology" Fascinoma's "Sad Feeling" And some random Will Oldham. EM: What is your current bedside read? In all honestly, my laptop. The last book I finished was Engine Summer- a weird sci-fi book from the 80's by John Crowley. EM:  What is your favorite city to visit when you travel abroad? And why? Ulu Watu in Bali. They have amazing surf, the locals are super cool, the food is amazing, and I met an ex-pat with a house on the beach who let's me crash there. EM:  What new projects you are building on right now? When I can, I'm logging footage for the documentary about The 1 Second Film. But mostly I've been developing a new site for The 1 Second Film project. The new site should launch in a few months, and will make it much easier for our 10,000 member crew to collaborate better. It will be a big step toward building the Collaboration Foundation and finally completing The 1 Second Film project. The goal is to gradually build a non-profit platform for global collaborative art projects that address various social issues. We recently completed the filing for the Collaboration Foundation's 501(c)3 tax-exempt status, and if all goes well, we will be able to qualify for grants and start building capacity soon. On the side, a friend and I are developing a project called Sketch for Change. Sketch for Change started in October as a grassroots fundraiser for Obama. We auctioned off 21 original drawings contributed by some amazing Lowbrow artists from Baby Tattooville, and ended up raising over $16,000 for Obama's campaign in ten days. People around the world also sent in Obama inspired art that we included in an election eve art opening in Vegas. We're now designing a new site that will expand the Sketch for Change concept to raise funds for other social issues. So, pretty much, I'm designing a bunch of websites, with a tiny bit of documentary. *** For more info on his upcoming projects, check out:  www.nirvan.com
