Taking her cues from all the things the fashion industry is not, Swedish designer Sandra Backlund is creating a buzz with her sculptural knit wears and uncompromising view on her work. Resolute on the handmade feeling of her garments being a significant factor in her work, Backlund’s experiemental methods as well as interest in the theories of culture have her constructing garments that are outside of any practicality or basic silhouette structure. Although she uses these things are her starting point, Backlund merely builds off of these basic ideas, letting her imagination and skill take each piece to the next level. Determined to stay outside of the trends, seasons and wearability that define the modern fashion industry, Backlund believe that fashion should be self governed and that people should be free to decide what they want to wear, when they want to wear it and it’s this basic ideal that makes her approach to her collections so organic and so appealing.
