As a child one of my most treasured pastimes was parking myself in the middle of the living room floor with my tub of crayons and a slew of coloring books. I was nothing less than OCD about staying in the lines, complementing colors and creating a stunning piece of art I was positive my mom would cherish for years to come. I haven’t been feeling too swell for the past few days and seeing as illness seems to make me regress, I made a trip to the 24-hour CVS to look for, what else, a coloring book. Much to my dismay the shelves packed with Dora the Explorer and Barbie and Friends wasn’t doing much to spark my creative interest. I settled on a $1 dinosaur version with crude, shakily drawn lines and called it a night. As I was driving home a question hit me: where are the coloring books for adults? Just because we grow up and have car payments and mortgages and financial planners (fyi: I don’t have any of these things, I’m just assuming that’s what “adults” have…) doesn’t mean we don’t still want to sit down with a Crayola 24-box and get to work.
Lo and behold there are companies like Garrett County Press as well as authors Aye Jay Moreno and Steven Toushin to the rescue! Poking fun at anything and everything from Pat Robertson to terrorists, there are in fact a number of “adult” targeted coloring books tackling all the subjects that really matter, because honestly if you had to choose between Glenn Danzig and Rainbow Brite, who’s team would you be on?
Most titles are available through Amazon.com, also check the Garrett County Press site for more options! Happy coloring!
