A Suite for Ma Dukes

For those who missed the majestic orchestration of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and an impressive 40-piece orchestra last Sunday, here is a video clip to whet your appetite.  Held on the Cal State LA campus at the Luckman complex, Mochilla and Artdontsleep threw part two of Timeless, an epic four part concert series commemorating the composers of the past whose legacies have influenced the beatmakers of  the future.

Q&A: Alejandra Hernandez

alejandraEM: What is your occupation and position?
I am a wardrobe stylist for mun2 and I do freelance design and development for a couple of clothing companies. I also sell vintage clothing and have my own accessories line boos&besito.

EM: How did you get into designing?
I started paying attention to fashion when I was extremely young.  On my kindergarten report card, my teacher’s comments included “She is the only student that notices when I wear new sneakers and compliments me on my pant suits.” At seven years old, I would stay up late on Sunday nights and watch “In Living Color” just to see what the fly girls were wearing.

Unholy Matrimony + Comme des Garçons

Unholy Matrimony + Comme des GarçonsLast June, EM interviewed artist and designer Brett Westfall in light of his collaboration with Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons). Westfall’s unique handcrafted pieces blur the line between fashion and art, and his high-concept designs fit well with Kawakubo’s work. In celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Comme des Garçons Umeda Hankyu store, Unholy Matrimony (Westfall’s brand of wearable conceptual art) recently released a line of limited edition T-shirts.

Revisiting SFaustina

6_b16

About five years ago, a free online magazine entitled Bloodwars popped up, which showcases the raw, dirty, drippy, stylistic, fast energy characteristics of graffiti from well known and not so well known artists. Sfaustina’s handpicked works are a breath of fresh air from the generic formulaic graffiti that is seen more and more today as the mass media/culture gets a hold of it. One won’t find many crisp lines and color schemes that appear to belong in a commercial for some athletic shoe. Pieces that took weeks to complete through careful manipulation of aerosol paint are nowhere to be found. Raw, quick (yet precise) hand-styles that boast creative energy and life litter the pages of Bloodwars.

Mufin Music Player Helps You Find Your Perfect Match

mufin1

Mufin (MUsic FINder) is a great new tool that lets you discover new music by recommending songs of similar characteristics. It does so by categorizing music into 40 different properties such as rhythm, tempo, and instruments, and creating a fingerprint for each song based on these traits.

Common Interview

“…superhuman is being caring and compassionate to people.”

It’s easy to dismiss the extravagance or scandal of artists as long as they create respectable work.  With the increased scrutiny brought by cellphone cameras, the internet, and TMZ it’s almost expected.  So when you discover an artist with talent, consistency, growth, and character it’s time to shut up and listen to what the hell is good.  KarmaloopTV took some time during the recent Magic tradeshow to sit down with Common and talk about his latest album, Software (his new clothing line with Microsoft),  the inspiration behind Chicago artists like Kanye, Lupe Fiasco, and the Cool Kids–plus his opinion of Christian Bale’s and his experience filming for Terminator Salvation.

Belvedere 1X

Belvedere has come up with a new beverage, a 100 proof vodka called Belvedere 1X. What’s interesting about this particular new product from LVMH is the packaging and branding that was created by Andre Saraiva, graffiti artist/night life entreprenuer and all around Parisian playboy. Andre owns Le Baron (both in Paris and Tokyo) and is a partner in Beatrice (New York). His network is vast and he is someone that is a constant fixture in progressive culture. I found this unique collaboration between Belvedere and Andre to be

The Future of Conservatism

Meet 13 year old Jonathan Krohn, the Conservative Political Action Conference’s “Wunderkind”. He believes that “conservatism is an ideology of protecting the people and the people’s right”.  I would like to see Jonathan Krohn and George W. Bush duke it out over the ideology of conservatism.

Miami Horror Featuring VEGA

magnumpr_miamihorror006_81Hell-bent on discovering new talent and collaborating with artists from all corners of the globe, Miami Horror’s Benjamin Vanguard picked a Texan (who happens to be a very dear friend of mine) by the name Alan Palomo aka VEGA for vocals on his new track. Alan was also former front man of Ghosthustler, a project which showcased his lush pop songwriting whilst bringing the unabashed romance back to production and live performance.
