Q&A: Joe C.

EM: Occupation and Position.
I’m a Freelance Photographer. I run my own company which is technically (legally) named Joe Cereghino Photography but I just go by Joe C.

EM: What neighborhood do you closely identify with? What makes your community so unique?
Washington, DC! All over, from H Street NE to 14th Street NW, Georgetown, and Tenley Town. I feel like DC is so unique because there is so much corporate and government shit going on yet the underground (scene) is still thriving.

EM: What’s the greatest item that you found at your local garage/estate sale?
Well, it was at a Record show. I picked up an original Beatles’ White Album. It has this huge fold out poster inside of it, with all these sick drawings and the lyrics to all the songs on the album. It also has four 8’x10″ prints, one of each Beatle. Long live Paul!

EM: What made you get into Photography?
I just always thought it was so rad to take photos, ever since I had my first Kodak 110mm camera in Kindergarten. It was never something I considered as a career until I realized how much I hated working boring office jobs.

EM: Besides photography, what other interests do you have?
Getting tattooed is a big part of my life. I spend a good portion of my days traveling, whether it is in America or overseas. I also ride a motorcycle and have a couple fixed gear bikes. Oh yeah and I eat lots of sushi and my (favorite) drink is whiskey.

EM: What was your favorite shoot?
That is a tough one…I’d say it was probably at the Virgin Music Festival in 2007. I was hired by Red Bull to shoot the Artist Lounge, I got to shoot some really amazing artists who were just hanging out and relaxing. I also had the opportunity to shoot a few sets while I was there, specifically Girl Talk – who puts on an insane show.

EM: What is your favorite painting and why?
I have an original Angry Woebots piece on Canvas that I copped like five years ago after seeing a huge piece of his in Seattle (http://www.armyofsnipers.blogspot.com/). As for art that I enjoy (and cannot afford), anything by Jean Michel Basquiat.

EM: If you could interview one unsung hero, who would it be? Why?
That is a tough one. I’ve never been so good with words so I probably wouldn’t want to interview anyone because I think I would blow it pretty bad. Shit. Hero makes it really tough, I can think of plenty of people that I would want to sit down with and just talk to if I had the opportunity. Maybe next time.

EM: What’s your favorite YouTube video?
I could watch this video on repeat for hours. I know I am capable of this because I have done it several times. Everything about it is so amazing. I love music that steps away from the norm and being in the back of a cab with an omnichord is perfect.

EM: Where are your favorite local spots to eat?
Big ups to Taylor Gourmet on H street NE. These dudes know how to make an amazing sandwich. They have bread driven down from Philly everyday in order to serve the freshest stuff. They have a great Italian Market inside too which reminds me of Italy, which is my favorite place in the world.

EM: What songs are at the top of your playlist at this very moment?
Defiance, OH – Calling old Friends
The Beatles – Her Majesty
Yann Tiersen – 8 Mm
Jenny Owen Youngs- Fuck was I

EM: What is your current bedside read?
Eric Clapton’s Biography. Dude is so legit and interesting.

EM: What is your favorite city to visit when you travel abroad? And why?
Florence, Italy. It just has this vibe that I love. There is always nonstop fun to be had. I have been there several times and whenever I make it to Europe I feel home as soon as I get there. Out of all the places I have visited in Europe I have spent the most time in Florence.

EM: What new projects you are building on right now?
Well, I just launched my website www.VoteJoeC.com on 1-20-09. I am always working on random projects here and there. I am in the process of setting up some stuff for South by Southwest Festival in Texas in a couple of months.
