The Mysterious Geographic Exploration of Morello is an award-winning animated series that takes place in a world of steam dirigibles, Victorian-era futurism and post-apocalyptic despair. Jasper Morello, disgraced steamship navigator, joins an expedition to seek a cure against a flesh-eating epidemic that has ravaged the floating city of Gothia. Along the way, he encounters the cowardice and treachery of his crew, among them the villainish Dr. Claude Belgon, a Royal Academy member whose pure dedication to science (at the expense of humanity) sheds light on the kind of minds responsible for the bleak, industrial metropoles of Morello’s world. The story is full of treacherous characters, Tim Burton morbidity, richly designed steampunk environments and the gothic horror of Edgar Allen Poe. Silhouette animation, CGI and found object set pieces render a beautiful yet frightening world which makes you wish we could live in a world with 19th century dirigibles and steam computers—with the exception of the flesh-eating disease.
Jasper Morello was a 2005 Oscar nominee for animated short film and a winner of the 2005 Grand Prix Court Metrage at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
