A Suite for Ma Dukes

For those who missed the majestic orchestration of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and an impressive 40-piece orchestra last Sunday, here is a video clip to whet your appetite.  Held on the Cal State LA campus at the Luckman complex, Mochilla and Artdontsleep threw part two of Timeless, an epic four part concert series commemorating the composers of the past whose legacies have influenced the beatmakers of  the future.

Aptly titled, A Suite for Ma Dukes, Atwood-Ferguson composed a sumptuous reworking of J Dilla’s best known works that served a dual purpose: an homage to the late musician as well as a benefit for his mother, Ma Dukes, who was struck with the same illness that claimed his life.

There were surprise guests that graced the event including Common, Talib Kweli andPosdnuous from De la Soul.  And amongst the stirring performance, Dilla’s mother, Ma Dukes, stood proud witnessing the legacy that her great son had left.  It was truly of the most poignant moments in LA’s recent music history.
