Q&A: Risa Mickenberg

EM:  Occupation and Position.
Writer, singer & co-songwriter for the band Jesus H Christ and the Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse.

EM:  What neighborhood do you closely identify with?  What makes your community so unique?
I’ve lived in the West Village of NYC for about 20 years.  I grew up in the country where it was chickadees or neighbors or nothing so I love the constant flow of bright, pretty, mostly odorless humanity on my street.  I love that I’m almost always on foot or on my bike.  It’s a great neighborhood for freelancers and cheese lovers and it’s an easy place to feel invisible if you just want to watch and judge or enjoy.  I live on a street that gets a lot of hand-painted trucks selling things like ice and game, and there are people on the sidewalk carrying bouquets of peacock feathers and big wooden Ts of cotton candy.

New “Day N Nite” Video by So Me

This song is so last year. I heard it on 102.7. So played out, right? Apparently not.  A few months ago I read that Kanye told Cudi that he hasn’t even reached his fullest potential yet. Is this true? Has Kingdom Cudi only begun? One of my friends thinks Cudi is sooo cute. Another friend said this video makes her like the song again. I want that milkshake he drinks at the bar.

Songwriter and multimedia artist Ramona Gonzalez recreates hazy alternative disco and shoegaze pop recorded over an eight-track cassette recorder, the result of which ends up feeling pleasantly nostalgic in their rediscovery of R&B melodies and beats.

Two films celebrating the early ’80s European punk rock diaspora! Considered to be a “lost” film until its very recent re-discovery, La Brune Et Moi is a whizz-bang tour through the Parisian punk underground, co-starring Pierre Clementi (The Conformist, Belle De Jour) and a long list of energetic Gallic bands like Metal Urbain, the Go-Go Pigalles and Astroflash.

The Show Must Go On

In spite of the fact that the fate of Project Runway has been up in the air since the close of season 5, Heidi Klum isn’t about to let her baby go. Continuing the competition into season 6, the show has been progressing as planned, although no episodes have been allowed to air due to impending litigation between producers and networks. In the meantime, the

Each week I rip a song from vinyl and post it up here. This week brings us “Pay Ya Dues” by Low Profile. This song came out in 1989 and I have yet to hear another rap song about this topic (but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong). Paying dues never really end though, right?
