Each week I rip a song from vinyl and post it up here. This week’s song is “Love Has Come Around” by Donald Byrd and 125th Street, N.Y.C. I’ve been consumed by twitter lately, and when I saw the hook posted by @paserock I decided this would be a good song to follow last week’s post.

Boogie and Altamont collaboration

boogie_rat

Shortly after the above photograph taken by Brooklyn-based photographer, Boogie was taken in Bushwick, soon after a gang shooting occurred. The hung rat was a warning sign that the Latin Kings (a well known Hispanic New York street gang) put up for the “snitch” (“rat”) that they sought out to kill.

The group is based in New York City. They’re the brains behind the “No Pants Subway Ride”, which took place on Saturday, January 10th, 2009 when nearly 2,500 people took off their pants on subways in 22 cities around the world.

Vinyl Evangelism

image1It was surely no coincidence that the reception for Syncronicity Space’s exhibition of religious record albums, Within Heaven’s Earshot, happened to land on Friday the 13th. That, however, was just the beginning of a night of endless kitsch.

I chanced upon it in a last-minute email and in just thirty minutes of wavering indecision, I was off.

A.C. Newman

Live Review: 3/17/09

I used to think one’s musical tastebuds (whether inclined towards the sugary or savory side) really dictated how you perceived of A.C. Newman and his music.  Yet after his virtuoso performance on St. Patrick’s Day – at Philadelphia’s Johnny Brendas – my view has changed.  No matter your previous inclinations; if you don’t like his music, you just don’t get it.  And my sonically dominated worldview contains very few absolutes; this has become one of them.

Early Works For Me If It Works For You II

Early Works For Me If It Works For You II
is a new 3-disc set from Dntel aka Jimmy Tamborello of The Postal Service. The new work contains DAT discoveries of things Dntel played with during the process of making Life Is Full Of Possibilities. With 3 discs to listen from, it’s a unique look into his creative process. The set consists of the 1998 release of Early Works For Me If It Works For You, the 2000 release of Something Always Goes Wrong, and the new third disc Early Works For Me If It Works For You II. Other than this new disc, it’s rare to find new Dntel instrumentals since Something Always Goes Wrong, mainly due to the fact that he didn’t have a computer to record full vocal tracks with more easily until then.

Considering everything going on in the US, and the World,  PB&J’s song, “Nothing to Worry About” could not have come at a better time, according to Josh Kouzomis, a.k.a DJ Troublemaker.  “[When] I heard the original Peter Bjorn and John song on KCRW, and had to find it immediately,” recalled the dynamic producer/DJ A couple weeks later, through cross continental file sharing, I am pleased to present you with one of my favorite tracks to date.”

Dengue Fever
is an L.A. based band formed by brothers, Ethan and Zac Holtzman. The brothers were inspired by their trip to Cambodia which is very apparent in their 60′s Cambodian rock style. Their music has garnered lots of praise for their eclectic style that is unmatched by any other band currently on the scene.
