Fat Possum Records
(2009)
Wavves is the project of Nathan Williams of San Diego, a precocious 22-year-old who’s been riding the currently fashionable movement of lo-fi punk that’s all fuzz and distortion with catchy harmonies. Like their name suggests, the band performs a boisterous brand of surf rock that’s less paradisiacal ocean waves than shit storm tsunami. →
P-Star Rising is a new documentary that follows the rise of 9 year-old Priscilla Diaz, better known by her rap moniker “P-Star” or for her role as Jessica Ruiz on The Electric Company on PBS. It has the makings of an interesting story. →
Hate it or love it, Lady Gaga is making herself known in the music world. From the radio to the club, it’s nearly impossible to not hear her sensual tunes pumping in the form of “Just Dance” or “Poker Face.” The question is, are we witnessing the rise of a new star or the continued abuse of an already saturated genre? →

What’s Up?
Obey Your Brain
(2009)
Like the automatous sound of New York’s Battles, the music of What’s Up? takes the experimental palettes of math rock to form an accesibly boisterous record of syncopated arpeggios and danceable 8-bit rhythms. Inspired by the changing seasons of their hometown Sacramento, the current lineup of Brian Marshall, Teddy Briggs and Robby Moncrieff has recorded a playful album that brings to mind the backward/forward sequence of a time-lapse video, with rhythm-driven tracks that vacillate between the virtuosically complex and whimsically childlike. →

Tired of long, dateless nights sitting on your couch watching Gossip Girl on your DVR? Then maybe it’s time you do what this Greek girl (as in Athens, not Alpha Phi) did and create a skateable house–throw in a couple cases of beer and you’ll have a steady flow of guys for life, as well as a place to shred the night away (if you’re into that sort of thing). More details and full gallery after the jump. →

She delved into the deep-seated, murky depths of what she could only designate as her memory; a place without bounds, like a never-ending field of green and flaxen, sun-bleached grass. The overexposed lens of her mind’s eye gave way to sacred moments, uncovered treasures so tangible she could slip them on like a sweater. Dancing with her father, her child-sized feet atop his shoes, with every path ahead of her, every choice of road, a life without limits. →
Some of you perusing the Blockbuster shelves may happen upon JCVD. Now the mere mention of Jean-Claude Van Damme may cause the bile to rise in your throat but I implore you to momentarily set aside your [legitimate] premonitions and give this film a chance. I never thought I’d say this, but Van Damme delivers a brilliant performance–without throwing fists or his signature roundhouse more than a couple times. →
