You haven’t heard this song at a club until you’ve heard it dropped by J.Rocc. I normally don’t make such bold statements, but the Funky President is one really goodass DJ. He was on stage at Central City Cafe in 19 ninety something. Maybe I’m young, maybe I’m old, but at the time, I hadn’t heard a Hip Hop DJ rock a crowd like this before. He freaked the intro in some crazy way, so much so that the tension built during the acappella intro caused panties to fly off once he dropped the beat. I may be exaggerating a little, but that’s kind of what it felt like (i don’t doubt a few babies were made that night either). I was hesitant to share this mp3 at first, but unless you have skills and timing like the Funky one, then it doesn’t matter. I fixed the skip in the vinyl copy I have too (i just learned how!). Either way, enjoy.

I think most people know Soul II Soul so I don’t have to explain too much about them, but what I found interesting was that they started off as a “sound system.” The group originally consisted of Jazzie B., Nelle Hooper, and Philip “Daddae” Harvey. With a rotating roster, Caron Wheeler came along and wrote & sang “Back to Life” and previous hit, “Keep on Movin’.” Wheeler also provided backing vocals for Elvis Costello, Howard Jones, and a track on Erasure’s The Innocents album. You might also recognize the name Nelle Hooper from her work with Massive Attack, Björk, Madonna, and U2.
