Q & A: The Drone’s Gareth Liddiard

drones-hallway2-hi-res-photo_credit-tony-mott1Gareth Liddiard of Australia’s garage-blue’s outfit The Drones took a few moments to get all Dostoevsky on Evil Monito’s ass (of course we prompted him to do so).  He was kind enough to give us his views on humanity, suffering, making music and of course lifeboat cannibalism.

EM: Havilah, the title of your new album, has multiple implications — ranging from the Biblical to the area where it was recorded — would you care to expound upon the name choice?

LIDDIARD: Naming records is harder than actually making them. So we just name our records after the places they were recorded.

The End of a “Golden” Age

De La Hoya Boxing

I know this is yesterday’s news but I wanted to take the time to tip my hat to one of boxing–no, one of the sporting world’s greatest.  At the age of 36, Oscar “Golden Boy” De La Hoya is hanging up his gloves and saying goodbye to the ring.

Q&A: Eddie Bezalel & Hugo Nicolson (of Headless Heroes)

Headless Heroes - The Silence of Love

Eddie Bezalel (executive producer) and Hugo Nicolson (producer) collaborated to release The Silence of Love, a compilation of covers performed by Alela Diane, Josh Klinghoffer and other musician friends. They released the record under Bezalel’s Headless Heroes imprint and is a stunning collection of well-known and obscure gems. EM spoke with Bezalel and Nicolson about the inspiration for and execution of the project. Here, they talk about record-shopping in Amoeba, making music in LA and Nevada City folk music.

Republicans Are Seeking Tea Baggers

Rachel Maddow from the Rachel Maddow Show humorously explains the GOP’s national Tax Day Tea Party (also known as the Republican “Tea Bagging” Party).  Major tea bagging events will be held around US cities, Capitol Hill and the White House.  Liberals will be targeted during the highly anticipated Republican national anti-Obama day, a movement responding to “change”

Daedelus | LA Nocturn

I fondly recalled a few years back, the evening that I interviewed the eloquent electronic artist, Daedelus.  We met up during the gloaming hour, y’know that brief segue into night when long shadows are cast against the walls and rooftop of the Little Temple.  It was dublab‘s underground film screening.  We launched into a discursive subject matter ranging from the LA indie scene, his involvement with KXLU’s Spaceways and dublab and most of all his delight  in collecting esoteric film scores among other sundries.  You can view the interview here.

ETNIES PUTS THOUSANDS OF HOMELESS ON FLOW
Over the last decade, etnies has flowed more than 25,000 pairs of shoes to homeless people living in Los Angeles!  The current tough economic times have led to the rise of homeless people in L.A., and today Pierre Andre and a crew from etnies hung out with the Skid Row residents.

Postopolis! LA (Part 1)

Can’t have too much of a good thing? Well Postopolis! LA, that five day event stretching from March 31st to April 5th, certainly proved that wrong. Co-sponsored by Storefront for Art and Architecture and For Your Art it was hosted by six bloggers,  David Basulto, Jace Clayton, Regine Debatty, Bryan Finoki, Dan Hill and Geoff Manaugh. Jam-packed with thought-provoking presentations on art and our built environment by speakers largely from the LA area it was streamed live to hundreds on the web and I echo the sentiment of one attendee that if they were to continue for a week more she’d still be here.
