Coastal Drilling – Update

Nothing like an oiled-up girl to get you in the mood...to protest.

Nothing like an oiled-up girl to get you in the mood...to protest.

A few weeks back, I posted about an environmental-activist campaign to oppose new leases for offshore drilling on U.S. coastlines.  Well, the hearings have come and gone, and it appears that the environmentalists greased themselves up and fought vigilantly.  Surfline.com reported on the San Francisco public hearing, which included both California Senator Barbara Boxer and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, as well as members from both sides of the offshore drilling battle.  According to the article, “if an applause-o-meter was a means for decision making in this great country, environmental justice would have been the victor.”  Unfortunately, it’s not…

Zumthor wins Pritzker Prize

zumthorArchitect Peter Zumthor is the recipient for the 2009 Pritzker Prize.  Zumthor’s body of work is sublime and modest; almost the opposite of what has been on the international media stage for the last decade.

The Pritzker Laureate title is one of the most prestigious in Architecture often called the Nobel Prize of Architecture. Created in 1979 by the Priztker family to “honor a living architect whose built work demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision and commitment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture.

“Riding the It Factor” from the New York Times

ridingfactor_1

With all the fixed gear gangs crowding the streets like schools of fish, it’s refreshing to see another side of bike culture with a slightly more sophisticated twist.  As bike-culture continues to grow at an astonishing rate with growing economic woes, the New York Times chronicles “a new pedigree” of bike and the lifestyle that comes with it: the Dutch bicycle.

Put A Little Green On

So, it’s Earth Day. I remember in elementary school we used to celebrate today by donning paper grocery bags covered with crumpled old gum wrappers, used post-its, and notebook paper or maybe a roll of chicken wire woven with banana peels, and sticky coke cans, and it was in these costumes that we would stand before our classmates and tell them the

Perhaps Pink Mountaintops’ Stephen McBean has been on a Twitter spree, but our Q&A with the frontman is short and sweet. Under 140 characters each, he talks about his latest record Outside Love, touring and the Geto Boys. To further elucidate his responses, I’ve added some visual aids for our readers to get a better understanding of what he might mean.

Ellery

poissondress11

He had been at sea for nearly a week now, in the same rumpled, maritime wear waiting for something, anything to happen along the placid sea that lapped in hushed and salty tones. He stood with his hand on the mast, thick and briny with the musty smell of water-logged wood. Suddenly, like a flash of liquid lighting, a figure rose from the depths a few yards a way. The breeze picked up and with renewed winds he sailed for what felt like hours in search of the hope lingering in the lagoon. She rose like a mermaid out of the tepid sea, her gold sequins glimmering likes scales under the white light of the sun.
