No, it’s not directed by Mr. Jackson himself (he’s a producer for this movie), but it is being helmed by his young protégé Neill Blomkamp. Most might recognize this name from the now dead Halo film-adaptation–it’s rumored that Jackson’s insistence on Blomkamp as the director could have been one of the main reasons the project fell apart. The two finally join forces on this peculiar film that seems as curious as Cloverfield.
Neill Blomkamp is known for his cinéma vérité style which is readily apparent in the cryptic teaser for the film. The clip seems more like a documentary than a sci-fi movie. That’s what makes this film so interesting. Blomkamp takes something very vivid and real like the South African slums from our own reality and puts a slight twist to it. Apparently, District 9 is about extraterrestrials who are forced to live in the slums on this planet which they accidentally landed on.
His work with the three small Halo live-action featurettes showcases his ability to blend raw-looking footage with otherworldly computer-generated images. With Jackson’s Weta studios also behind him, it seems like skies the limit for Blomkamp’s first significant feature film. Keep your fingers crossed.

This film also has some cool faux-media associated with it…if you take a look at the links at the bottom of the D-9 page you’ll find a blog created by the alien in the preview, and it translates what he’s actually saying….
