Economic downturns usually lead to rise of interest in the occult and supernatural, many of the top Rock/Indie songs of 2007 had the word ‘ghost’ in the title and last year marked the beginning of the recent vampire movie craze. Not suprising then that a film featuring witches prancing around butt naked, flirting with demons, and bringing forth deformed progeny from their unholy union, would attract a packed audience. Such was the case at last Wednesday’s Hammer showing of Haxan. Made in the Golden Era of Silent movies, Haxan is a film that uses the term ‘documentary’ quite loosely. →

This past February, Detroit rapper Invincible submitted the video for her track “Ropes” to mtvU for consideration in the channel’s lineup. The video was accepted in mid-March. But after MTV’s standards department further reviewed the video’s content, they reconsidered, citing “how its suicidal undertones would be problematic on the channel it was accepted for (mtvU),” and cut it from the channel’s lineup.

Cultural Urge is the creative outlet of Sydney based artist Sebastian Vaccaro. Inspired by cartoons and fictitious worlds, Sebastian’s love for drawing began at an early age and hasn’t yet stopped.
His involvement in various subcultures growing up such as Heavy Metal, Hip Hop, Graffiti, Tattoos, Skateboarding and comic books, has led him to create beautiful artworks which contain remnants of these “disorderly” influences. Despite the large surfaces where these graphical dreams take place, each piece is handled with precision and strongly calculated. →

Corey Helford Gallery – Culver City, CA
5/29/09
***
Corey Helford Gallery is proud to present the highly-anticipated solo exhibition of new works by celebrated Pop-artist COOP. Since 2006, Los Angeles has been on the waiting list for COOP’s next explosion of larger-than-life pop iconography, and his upcoming solo show of irreverent and outrageous fine art is built for speed. Bold and brazen does not begin to describe the parade of leering devils, voluptuous vixens, and hell-bound hot rods that dominate his electric acrylic-on-canvas paintings. →
