Björk’s Voltaic LA Premier at the Montalbán

voltaic_1 What kind of words can be used to describe Björk?  How does one categorize her work?  Fast on the wake of the King of Pop's tragic passing, many of us must be wondering how the chips will fall when our final number is called.  One thing is for sure: when all is said and done, there is no question that the world will recognize this small Icelandic powerhouse as one of the most transcendent female voices of our time.  Tuesday night marked the LA premier of Björk's Voltaic and where else would we find ourselves but at the Montalbán for Nike Sportswear x Flux's infamous Cinema Tuesdays. voltaic_2 Voltaic: The Volta Tour Live is a multi-faceted compilation which includes Björk's concerts in Paris and Reykjavik along with the critically acclaimed Volta LP which inspired the two-year tour, music videos, live studio performances, and remixed Volta songs.  The package is available in five different special "flavors."  This night marked the LA premier of the film portion of Voltaic and the anxious queue  fidgeting by the door exposed the well-deserved anticipation for the celebration. voltaic_3 voltaic_4 Björk's distinctive soprano voice filled the air as Belvedere IX served cocktails during the pre-screening party.  By the time Voltaic was set to start the theater was packed to the brim with a buzzing, eager audience. voltaic_5 voltaic_61 We were watching a film, to be sure, but you could have sworn Björk was there in person the way the crowd erupted as the vivacious artist took stage on screen.  In moments the Montalbán was alive with music as the quick, in-your-face style of editing caused you to feel like you were actually sitting in the middle of the Parisian crowd.  Voltaic was the breathtaking spectacle we've come to expect from Björk, a conglomeration of artistic performance, truly epic music, and dazzling effects--all carried by the unique, powerful voice which is possibly one of the most identifiable sounds in music today.  Björk brought an incredible energy to the stage, so much so you'd think you were witnessing the pure expression of joy from a 16-year old, not a 43-year old who's been nominated for 13 Grammy awards, two Golden Globes, and even an Oscar.  Voltaic had the feel of a celebration rather than a performance.  You had the sense you were somehow participating in an epic festival of lights and music, led by a siren-voiced muse supplied with a limitless source of energy.  Sounds ridiculous?  Few things seem ordinary whenever Björk is involved--they simply become captivating. voltaic_7 As always, Flux and Nike Sportswear provided an afterparty with DJ LA RIOTS spinning the good music while exclusive Björk Volta posters were distributed for free proving once again that good times only beget greater times. voltaic_8 voltaic_9 If you have the chance to obtain a copy of Voltaic don't bother hesitating.  It's Björk.  That alone should speak volumes.  Thanks again to Flux and Nike Sportswear for yet another night to remember. *** Photo Credits: Marla Aufmuth [http://www.mcaevents.com] For more photos of the event visit the Flux Flickr page here.
