Prada Transformer

Designed as a modular structure that can me shifted into varying shapes, the Prada Transformer has been garnering attention since it was planted on the grounds of Seoul’s ancient Gyeonghui Palace earlier this spring. The Structure’s inaugural exhibition was the traveling Prada retrospective “Waist Down” which chronicled the skirt as seen through the eyes of creative director Miuccia Prada. In June four cranes descended on the steel and polyvinyl structure, shifting it onto another side and creating it’s next phase: the rectangle.

The rectangle will house a two week film festival curated by American film critic Elvis Mitchell and director Gonzalez Inarritu (“Babel”, “21 Grams”, “Amores Perros”) and introduce (or re-introduce) audiences to the work of Werner Herzog, Karl Dreyer and Kim Ji-woon. The project is set for two more turns, one as an installation for the Silver Lion Award winning artist Nathalie Djurberg and the final turn of the transformer will be a fashion show, assumedly a Prada fashion show.

Seoul is a city on the rise, and Prada’s choice to bring The Transformer to an up-and-coming area shows commitment to the next generation of art and fashion. There is amazing creativity growing in countries and cities all over the world. Good design isn’t designated to established sectors and the wider we keep our eyes for new and inspired talant, the better all facets of art are going to be.
