Mayuko Fujino

Partly inspired by David Hockney and The Beatles, Tokyo-based artist Mayuko Fujino makes collages using an X-Acto knife, paper and magazine pages. Each of her works is put together by hand using precise cutouts and glossy prints. After having watched an introductory video for the traditional Japanese dyeing process at a museum, Fujino became interested in cutting stencil plates and has since produced a large collection of collages that colorfully reveal her inner world.

In addition to her collage art, Fujino runs a traveling shadow puppet troupe with musician Tomoyuki Takahashi (Kowun Ryusui). The performances, called “georamas,” involve only a lantern-slide projector, small screen, paper shadow puppets and two puppeteers.
