Machine puts the Freeze on

freeze-b-que-1

The Freeze-B-Q
Its usually always interesting to see what Machine Project will come up with next. But especially so on holidays like the Fourth of July (remember that liquid psychedelic projection?) This year they did two events. One a Freeze-B-Q members party and then immediately following, a Fourth of July Sing-a-long, which was open to the public.

Teengirl Fantasy – “Portofino”

In the Loop, Vol. 5
Teengirl Fantasy – Portofino

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Don’t mind the tacky Myspace layout and Angelfire “fan” website of electronic duo Teengirl Fantasy, the bedroom project of Ohio students Logan Takahashi and Nick Weiss. The two craft pulsating 8-bit rhythms informed by bass-heavy house and dub music. “Portofino” is part of Dublab and Anticon‘s In the Loop vinyl compilation, the fifth installment of new music from diverse genres and regions. Its soothing arpeggios and foot-stopping bass make this a formidable track for the summer.

The Cinespia Screening of Kenneth Anger’s Films
Hollywood Forever Cemetery – Los Angeles, CA

***
Beautiful, erotic, phantasmagoric, the films of Kenneth Anger are a national treasure. Mick Jagger, Anita Pallenberg, Marianne Faithfull, Jimmy Page, and a  parade of other 60s luminaries collaborate on this collection of short films . They range from rich mystcal imagery and visual essays of psychedelic color to insider documentary footage of bikers and a glittering love letter to early black and white film.

The Troubadour – West Hollywood, CA
Live Review: 7/8/09
***
The Dirty Projectors played to a sold-out crowd at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, filling up both floors of the venue with an eager audience. Bitte Orca is the band’s latest record, and it is easily the band’s most ambitious—and oddly most accessible—record to date. Band leader Dave Longstreth’s musical experimentations have frequently showed great promise, like nascent future pop songs

What’s Up?

What's Up?

The Troubadour – West Hollywood, CA
Live Review: 7/8/09
***

The music of What’s Up? is the perfect marriage between the 8-bit nostalgia of video game music and technical virtuosity of prog rock. Opening for the Dirty Projectors, the Portland-based three-piece band played an entire set of their debut record Content Imagination, reproducing their distorted loops and riffs to a Los Angeles audience

Q&A: Richard Jankovich (Pocket)

Pocket

Frontman of electro-pop band Burnside Project, Richard Jankovich (aka Pocket) moved to Los Angeles after having lived in New York for a little over a decade. His current project is music-by-pocket, a compilation of remixes being digitally released, one song at a time. Remixes include songs by The Chameleons, Joanna Newsom, Cat Power and Radiohead, and they are just a few of many musicians on his checklist of  collaborations and remixes. Richard recently dropped by at our studio in Echo Park and spoke with us about Los Angeles and the art of remixing.

Man Links

It’s Friday, which means that most of you are probably working hard at pretending to work.  Since there are still five whole hours until happy hour, here are a few links to pass the time and help you bone up on some of the finer points of style.  You don’t want to hit the town looking like a hayseed, do you?  Part of being a man is dressing like one, so step your game up.
