The costs of importing and exporting food threaten not only our environment but also our health as well, as a recent film will argue. It is now more important than ever to buy fresh produce locally as to undermine a greedy industry and to dine on tastier, fresher foods. Tomorrow, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) will be in Downtown Los Angeles to sell ready-made mixed bags of fruits and vegetables, all farmed locally. Each bag comes with a substantial amount and variety of produce and costs much less than a trip to the weekend farmer’s market. Press release after the jump… →

If you were raised in Los Angeles, then you are aware that Mexicans have a deep history with the city since its inception. We can date back to the time when Califas was Mexico, but even more recently, we can acknowledge that the tenuous line that borders Mexico and California hardly separates the amalgam between the two. From the infamous Zoot Suiters, to the intriguing Low-riders, the hybridization of Mexican American culture is undeniable. And with salsa, conjunto jaracho, and banda as staples in our music catalogue, there is yet another sound that we can add to our collection. Combining all the latter, but welcoming the discotheque beats that our parents boogied to in the ’70s, this new genre offers a fresh perspective on Mexico’s dance scene. Music producer and beat maker Chico Sonido is a recent transplant to Los Angeles and has been whipping this mash-up every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at Mas Exitos in Glassel Park. →
Half a century after the innovations of Nikola Tesla, the work of brilliant people like MIT physicist Martin Soljacic, who made groundbreaking leads in the possibility of wireless electricity, will bring the technology of science fiction closer to reality. Alkaline batteries and electric wires make for much waste and clutter →

Seminal punk band Meat Puppets is often credited with inspiring Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, although they didn’t quite make it big until their appearance on Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance in 1993. In the past three decades, brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood released a prolific body of work, releasing 11 studio albums and going through two separate break-ups. Their latest record, Sewn Together, came out this year, and the band is featured on ABC’s Amplified series in a two-part short documentary. →
Relatively unknown comedian Maronzio Vance made some noise last year when he put out a video accusing Sean “Diddy” Combs of ruining the careers of nearly everyone to ever sign with Bad Boy. Even though Maronzio is clearly joking, it raises an interesting question: are you really a successful label executive when you’re better known than any of your artists? I’ve heard similar musings from people in the industry. Part 2–his response to Diddy’s response–after the jump. →
A new series of personal essays about job loss, mental health, and the undying pursuit of art.
When we drove out of the mountains that morning it was hot, the sun climbing higher in the sky, heating up the plants and the air around us and the metal of our car as it barreled down a neck of Lincoln Highway woven like thread through the Pennsylvania Laurel Highlands. →

Friends and family of Dash Snow have come together for a memorial exhibition celebrating his life and work which is on display now through August 15th at the Deitch gallery in NY. Compiling video, photos and works made in the artist’s memory as well as artwork from personal collections and never before seen polaroids from his studio, the memorial is a testament to the influence Snow had as one of the most noted street artists of his generation. Cargo freights exploding. Hikes gone wrong. Late night drives off a cliff. Any avid Grey’s Anatomy watcher knows when trauma strikes, the world slows as it races forward to count the seconds between heart beats, the minutes between breaths, and the hours between what can be done and what is too late to salvage. The skincare line Villainess has a knack for stirring up the same concoction of fear and lust, without the machinery. →
