Anthony Zinonos

protest close

Do you remember as a youth, working on art projects that  involved paper maches or collages?  It was  peculiar to me how they were aimed at “getting in touch with one’s feelings” or “expressing one’s artistic side.”  And yet, the supplies were slim. We had magazines like Better Homes and Gardens, Marie Claire or Newsweek- what about National Geographic and Bop?!  Hello, we were kids. Well, for Anthony Zinonos, adolescent therapy hinted at a promising career.

The Sartorialist – The Book

The-Sartorialist-Book-by-Scott-Schuman-3-tile.jpg

The blog world is in a buzz over the anticipated release of the new book by street photographer Scott Schuman. Based on the work of his incredibly popular style site The Sartorialist, Shuman has compiled nearly 500 pages of his favorite shots from all over the world for the publication which is set to hit bookshelves in the U.S. this August. Spawning a slew of Sartorialist wannabes since the birth of the site in 2005, none of them have ever been able to capture that inexplicable ability Schuman has for finding the right person in the right moment. Ignoring labels and trends, his sharp eye for what is truly chic makes his shots stand out from the rest and are sure to be respected and inspiring for years to come. Die hard Sartorialist fans get over to Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Borders to get your name on the pre-sale list and keep your eyes and ears open for a full fledged book tour and events surrounding the launch!

Following the success of Tina Tsang’s Undergrowth Design in London, we are pleased to be offering a limited edition selection at Urban Outfitters stores this month. “My designs make tea drinking a fun and flirtatious affair,” says the London-based designer. After graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art, Tsang started out as a lingerie designer before creating Undergrowth Design in 2007. The Blaue Blume ceramics are her most recent and successful venture.

Interview: Gus Seyffert (Willoughby)

Willoughby is the alias of Gus Seyffert, founder of Sargent Records (his production label) and occasional session musician for The Bird & The Bee and Priscilla Ahn. His work involves all aspects of music, including writing, producing and playing instruments, of which he has several varieties in his Elysian Park home and studio. Vintage instruments and eight-track recorders make up the confines of one side of his home, and the day I stopped by Sargent Place to speak to Gus about his music, he and his bull mastiff (named after the jazz legend, Art Tatum) greeted me at the door.

Music Video Monday

KiD CuDi feat. Kanye West & Common – Make Her Say from Burnocchio. Story. on Vimeo.

Mondays suck. But, cool music videos are always great. So, let’s blend the two and create a magical middle ground.  First up, Kid Cudi drops the video for his track with Common and Kanye West called “I Poke Her Face”, or as the suits are now calling it “Make Her Say”.  The video has great cinematography and includes a cameo from balloons and the upcoming DJ Hero controller.  After the jump, we have Polo-fiend 88-Keys’ second single off his standout 2008 album, The Death of Adam, where he teams up with Shitake Monkey to create “The Friend Zone”.  Another cool concept and a must-listen album (with a couple bonus clips thrown in).  Enjoy!

Q&A: Korin Faught

portrait-of-korin-faught-by-roman-cho

Duality, stillness and mystery flow through out Korin Faught’s paintings.  Her most recent solo show “Echo,” held at the Corey Helford Gallery, features “mirrored” images of women and men that are provocative and surreal. The settings serve as a  backdrop, drawing the viewer into the mind of the character and producing an intimacy between the subject and his/her environment. It is as if the viewer is welcomed into the homes, the thoughts or even the illusions of the characters. Altogether, her work distills a perplexing femininity that is both nomadic and settled.
