I’m really interested to see what the Mulleavy sisters roll out for their Go! International collection, set to hit Target stores Dec. 20th. Known for ethereal creations that appear almost too delicate to touch, one has to wonder how that handcrafted, DIY sensibility will translate to the mass market. According to WWD, who spoke with Target spokesman Joshua Thomas, the focus will be on details, layering and mixes of patterns and fabrics, which if you have seen any of the Rodarte runway shows you know these are elements the designers are very familiar with. Although I think the pairing is an interesting one, of all the Go! International recruits Rodarte seems like the hardest to mass market-ize. The sister duo has been heralded for their stunning runway collections, but how that aesthetic will trickle down remains to be seen. Once again it’s a situation where the collection could turn out to be an amazing set of pieces girls are crawling over each other to snag, or it could be just another story of a big time runway designer who can’t hack it for the mass consumer. I think these high-low collaborations are the ultimate test for a designer, because it’s one thing to have any number of fabrics, embellishments, trims and patterns at your disposal, it’s another to have to try to match grand ideas to a shoestring budget. Regardless, these things can be done, they have been done and with the right amount of creativity and out of the box thinking, they can be amazing. Call me crazy, but I have high hopes for this…
