With a title like Time To Die, you might think the Dodos’ third disc is their ‘mature album,’ a deadly serious undertaking punctuated with string sections and synths. Nice try kid, but you’ve got it all wrong. While indie rock’s go-to guy, Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Fleet Foxes, The Shins), hopped behind the boards this time, the Dodos’ wildly-percussive style is still centered around two key elements: the punchy percussion of Logan Kroeber and the Fahey-infused finger-picking of frontman Meric Long. Oh sure, you’ll hear a horn blast here and there, but it’s never →

At age 26, Ryan McGinley was the youngest artist to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art back in 2003. For more than a decade, McGinley has been capturing the spirit of his generation with a sensational theme present in his body of work: nude, young people shot in striking, cavernous realms across America for his first solo show in London, Moonmilk at Alison Jacques Gallery. McGinley, who has a background in graphic design, has been photographing the bohemian art scene in the →

The Bay Area is proud to announce that their home-grown hip hop/funk/jazz/soul group, known for their live performances, the Crown City Rockers are dropping their new album, The Day After Forever. The album will be their second one since the release of Earthtones, back in 2004. Its electro-cosmic funk sound is a switch-up from the jazzy boom-bap sound from their last album, Earthtones. →

First and foremost, shout out to Ankh Marketing for getting two tickets to this sold-out show. At a face value of $80 each, it was a huge gesture. Now, let’s start the show. Seeing a concert at a symphony hall shattered several of my preconceptions about hip hop concerts. On a wooden stage surrounded by organ stacks that resembled Superman’s fortress of solitude, the artists put on one of the more unusual shows I’ve seen live. →
Echo Park is one of the last vestiges of a town-like setting in Los Angeles. Echo Park originally found as Edendale used to be the movie capital of Los Angeles. In fact most silent films featuring Charlie Chaplin were filmed in Echo Park lake. Recently an influx of hipsters/hippies into Echo Park has created an economic and cultural shift in the city. This is a candid interview with one of Echo Park’s inhabitants. Meet Toks, he possesses an old soul and he shares some interesting words on life in the good ol’ EP.

“Still Night, Still Light”
Au Revoir Simone came to life in the Fall of 2003 when Erika Forster (keyboards & vocals), Annie Hart (keyboards & vocals) and Heather D’Angelo (drum machines, keyboard & vocals) exchanged stories and ambitions, and discovered that they shared a common desire to form an all-keyboard band. Before too long, they started playing shows around NYC and Brooklyn and this dynamic trio elevated everyone who listened. →
