HFS: Mondo Macabro: Turkish Rip-Offs Night
The Cinefamily – Los Angeles, CA
09/19/09

Turkey is truly the wild, wild Middle East of mondo macabro. Here you find the outlying reaches of world exploitation, where the heroes are macho men who can beat you up with just their moustaches, and the copyright infringement flows as freely as the currents of the Bosphorus River. From the wholesale plundering of battle footage from American sci-fi smash hits (with which to mash into their own space operas), to the endless cavalcade of scene-for-scene, shot-for-shot, unauthorized remakes (Turkish Exorcist, Turkish Death Wish, Turkish Young Frankenstein) — the bandits of Turkish cinema were unstoppable.
LAPP- PRO (Light Art Performance Photography) captures light in a magnetic form, illuminating scene settings in photographs and developing stories with each stroke of light. The masterminds behind this photographic technique, German born Jan Wöllert and Jörg Miedza, both play around with movement of light, adding volume, intrigue and narration to the photographs. Just as graffiti introduces color to a muted wall, the lit-up figures bring substance to its alien environment.
This past year has been a real head scratcher for retailers as they try to figure out new and innovative ways to get customers through the door and to the cash wrap. The recession has not been kind to the industry and everyone has been searching for that magic fix that will get people dropping cash again. Womenswear Daily recently did a piece focusing on how designers, creative directors, ad agencies and PR offices are brainstorming for new ways to lure patrons back and keep them intrigued. The article touched on topics from new digital markets to the sudden rise in high-low collaborations to Johnny Cupcakes founder John Earle’s community style approach of Twitter spread “meet-ups” inviting people to take part in free pizza and movies. →
A few weeks back, I received a copy of Lyrics Born’s latest mixtape Variety Show Season Pho for my review. Time got away from me, and I didn’t end up posting the review for a few weeks, even though the album stayed on constant rotation during that time. As luck would have it, on the day that I went to post the review, I received an email with an offer to interview the man himself. Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity.
For those who don’t know, Lyrics Born is a rapper who hails from Berkeley, California. He got his start in a group called Latyrx while attending UC Davis, and has been putting out hip hop albums ever since. →

So, here I am at Fela Kuti’s grave. I got my boombox, a jug of wine, and my new Pax Nicholas CD in tow. It was my hopes to obtain a posthumous quote from him for this review. First, I open the wine because I’m a little nervous about talking to the dead. Then, I pop in the album and slowly ramp up the volume. You don’t want to wake the dead suddenly, so as to not get them grumpy. After playing a few minutes of the title track “Na Teef Know De Road of Teef” →
