Pioneers in African American Film

450

Screening of Murder in Harlem and The Blood of Jesus
Hammer Museum – Santa Monica, CA
9/11/09
***
In the 1920s, African American filmmakers, backed by nascent, black-controlled production companies and exhibition spaces, began to interrogate and deepen African American images onscreen, revising those produced by generally white-controlled institutions in cinema’s first three decades. Writer/directors Oscar Micheaux and Spencer Williams are among the most intriguing figures from this period, painting subtle and complex portraits of African American social and cultural dynamics and dilemmas, from a distinctly black point of view.

Pulp Spirit

Picture 1.png

The brainchild of model Joni Harbeck and photographer Neil Krug, Pulp captures a series of saturated and enigmatic photos shot over the duo’s year long collaboration. Drawing inspiration from classic elements of 60′s and 70′s culture such as LP covers, vintage books and B-movie cinema, Krug and Harbeck, who shot almost exclusively with Polaroid film, achieved some pretty authentic and gorgeous stills with very little modern manipulation.

Coming Soon: (Untitled)

(Untitled)

The Chelsea art world is depicted in comedic and irreverent tones in Jonathan Parker and Catherine di Napoli’s upcoming (Untitled), a film that explores the absurdity of art and commerce. Starring Adam Goldberg and Marley Shelton, it features a motley cast of art world archetypes, like the shrewd gallery owner, disaffected (and misunderstood) artist, hapless nouveau riche collector and post-Warhol pop art magnate.

1-999-GET-COLOR

Straight off their new record Get Color, HEALTH debut this new video for their first single “Die Slow.” It’s visually stunning, with orgy pits, blood sacrifices and seizure-inducing flashes (NSFW). Starting tomorrow, the band opens for NIN at The Wiltern, ending three performances in Los Angeles at The Troubadour on Sept. 9 with Pictureplane and Dam-Funk.

The Concept Cars of Pebble Beach

infiniti-rear

Pebble Beach Councours d’Elegance
Monterey, CA
8/15 – 8/17
***

Long known for it’s love of pre-baby-boomer snobbery, Pebble Beach surprisingly hosts a few cutting edge vehicles as well, and not the crappy kind, either – these are the real high-end, super expensive kind; some with their own custom Louis Vuitton luggage. Sure, they’re not all winners, and some didn’t even deserve pictures, but it’s still nice to mix a little new-fangled lovin’ in with the bygone beauties.

A Memory that Moves: Exploring the Work of David Jon Kassan

david_1

What is it about art that captivates the human psyche?   What stops us dead in our tracks, staring and wondering for immeasurable moments in time?  David Jon Kassan has been exploring these questions in his art for years now, and chances are you’ve seen his distinct work somewhere around you, either in a gallery or on a magazine stand.  Kassan’s pieces are familiar yet startlingly confrontational in their intricacies and beauty.  He recently took the time to get down with EM and answer some questions about art, inspiration, design, and how it feels to finally live the dream.

Moonlight Highlighting Cream Colour

moonlight

Freelance. Babysitting. The oldest profession there is (waiting tables, of course!). Desperate times call for desperate measures. Luckily, La Bella Donna is here to make moonlighting the highlight of your day. Their mineral pigment Moonlight Highlighting Cream Colour is a multi-purpose blush that also has lip and eye shimmer listed as special skills. We recommend dabbing some on your collarbone in your off-hours to draw out even more of your inherent sparkle. Because everyone should have a chance to shine on these taxing (or, ahem, untaxed) times.

Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo

Davila 666

The Echo – Los Angeles, CA
Live Review: 9/1/09
***
It was a night of revivalist garage and punk rock at The Echo on Tuesday, when Puerto Rico’s “answer to the Black Lips” Davila 666 performed their first  set in Los Angeles. The Caribbean five-piece are part of a continuing wave of garage and punk nostalgists across the country
