FYF Fest: Save Our State Parks

Kevin Morby of Woods

L.A. State Historic Park, California
Live Review: 9/5/09
***
There was much talk about the FYF Fest being the hipster Woodstock, and for all intents and purposes, this may have been true. With a lineup of L.A. scene and Pitchfork-friendly bands, the crowd at this summer festival, intended to raise awareness about California’s state parks, was drawn from the teenage and twenties demographic. I suspect that the L.A. State Historic Park had never in its history drawn such large numbers, let alone a crowd of this kind.

Flux Screening Series Continues Despite Controversy

hammerscreening_1

Never shy away from good news when it’s associated with bad news–at least when the good news is brilliantly crafted shorts and music videos from some of the industry’s best talents.  After much anticipation, last week Flux finally welcomed us back to the heart of Westwood with their screening series at the Hammer Museum.  With the program set weeks ago, who could have known that a day before they were to screen Spike Jonze’s latest short film, its star would spark one of the most talked about celebrity controversies of the year?  Regardless, Flux remained determined to continue with its preview of “Once A Fairytale” despite Kanye West’s recent blacklisting by the general public and colleagues alike, adding more spice to a an already intriguing night of screenings.

San Diego Street Scene

Nathan Williams of Wavves

Downtown San Diego, California
Live Review: 8/28 to 8/29/09

Over two days of sweltering heat in Downtown San Diego, the 25th annual Street Scene Festival gathered an eclectic lineup of major and indie acts not frequently seen this far south of California. Street Scene is San Diego’s major showcase for international and local talent, and given the city’s financial troubles lately, the festival was a significant draw for downtown tourism.

A New Screening Series Monthly at the Downtown Independent
Mochilla is dedicated to bringing you music and visuals of the highest order.  During the discussions around the successful screening of Postcard from Cali with Jim from the Downtown Independent we stumbled upon the idea of a series of Music Documentaries that are obscure, unseen and maybe just didn’t have a proper run.

The crew has new rolas locas trucha. Not to mention this is the only legitimate spot that’ll serve up Latin American musical rarities that’ll likely surprise and inspire for those in attendance.  Come witness some Mexican pysch, freakbeats, cumbia and everything in-between. The usual suspects in attendance: LENGUA, ENORBITO, GANAS, HOSEH and CHICO SONIDO.

Evolution of the Muff…

evo_totebag1Bold reds, banana yellow and kelly greens bedeck his new products in a manner that calls to mind Babara Kruger on nitrous oxide. Quirky caprice and tongue-in-cheek shenanigans fuel the aesthetic of Ashkahn Shahparnia’s new site. We interviewed the graphic designer a while back on our site and we’re pleased to see how he’s progressed since then. Just in. The now infamous Evolution of the Muff design can be slung around your shoulder as a humorous observation on the hirsute sensibilities of the female genitalia.

We Have Band

Hailing from the UK, We Have Band have taken Westerners by storm with a fresh electro-pop sensation. Danceable tracks, layered with synths, bleeps and clasps, stream throughout their music, comparing them to the likes of  new wave heavyweights,  Fischerspooner.
