Dizzee & Nike

On Friday, September 18th, Nike Sportswear and Mercury Music prize winning recording artist Dizzee Rascal will release the very special, and strictly limited, Nike Air Max 90 ‘Tongue N’ Cheek’ sneaker.  Created in a special partnership between Dizzee, Nike Design and long-time Dizzee collaborator and creative director, Ben Drury, who has designed the artwork for three of Dizzee’s albums, including his new record ‘Tongue N’ Cheek’, said, “We’ve had a long standing creative relationship dating back to Dizzee’s first album, ‘Boy In Da Corner’. Independently, we’ve also both had close links with Nike and it just made perfect sense to come together on this project and join the dots. It was an organic, almost unconscious process.”

Waste Not, Want Not

waste-twice-2009-fall-collection-2.jpg

I am so excited about fall I can hardly stand it! I was keeping a keen eye out for ways to pad my cool weather wardrobe when I just happened to stumble on Japanese brand Waste(twice). Pegging themselves as a “genuine comfortable clothing” company, Motoki Kawanabe and Shinsuke Kojima draw a nice line between rugged and tailored sensibilities. I love how there is

Mobile “Hi Fi” Tour Launch + Pilipino Workers’ Center Fundraiser
Pilipino Workers’ Center, los Angeles- CA
09/26/09

In August of 2002, the City of Los Angeles designated the neighborhood south of the 101 Freeway and north of Beverly Boulevard, between Glendale Boulevard and Virgil Avenue, as Historic Filipinotown, a.k.a. “Hi Fi.” What makes Historic Filipinotown Filipino? What is historic about the area? Pilipino Workers’ Center (PWC), Public Matters, UCLA’s Center for Remap and HyperCities have partnered on PDUB Productions to engage neighborhood youth in a multimedia project that brings Hi Fi’s hidden stories to the surface.

Pull and Bear Store Opening
Oxford St- London
09/16/09

Pull and Bear store open its doors on Oxford Street and celebrate with a party! This is the fourth UK opening since the firm embarked on its British expansion strategy. Pull and Bear’s flagship store at Oxford Street occupies 600 square metres on two floors, and sells the Man and Woman collections. It features a bespoke décor, with elements designed especially for this space, and can immediately be spotted from the street thanks to the 8 metre wide LED screen projecting campaign and graphic videos, as well as what’s going on inside the store in real time, thanks to the connection with several CCTV cameras. But there’s more: a permanent stage equipped with an audiovisual structure provides the perfect setting for concerts aimed at further strengthening Pull and Bear’s long-standing ties with the music scene.

Celebrity Meltdown

*Sep 13 - 00:05*

We live in tough times.  But even in the shadow of a economic struggles and international conflict, it’s still been shocking to witness the emotional unraveling of a seemingly unending list of high profile figures.  From entertainer Kanye West to South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson, it appears everyone is taking their turn in the hot seat.  Who’s next?  More importantly, in a generation where technology and media carries nearly every situation before the public eye for their careful inspection, where is the line between “saying what’s real” and saying something completely inappropriate?

The Recess Ends

During the heart of the recession this past winter, two brothers, Austin and Brian Chu, decided to embark on a 50-state journey profiling the national impact of the recession.  What they found during their three-month marathon was both shockingly grim and irreverently hopeful, contrasting the desperate economic situation with the unrelenting spirit of the American workforce.  The film is the first from the Chu brothers and debuts in San Francisco, CA on 9/30/09.

Princeton

Watch as  the Los Angeles-based band, Princeton reenacts their theatrical “demise” in this new video.  Of course the summery vibe of the hillside and pleasant post-rock vibe of their track, “Martina and Clive Krantz” belies the dark task at hand.  For those who want great, balmy songs to grace the fading days of summer, Cocoon of Love is the apropos album to herald in the autumnal days.  Their debut LP is slated to release September 29th on Kanine Records.

Outside Lands Festival
San Francisco, CA
8/28 – 8/30
***

Outside Lands is the concert of concerts when you live in San Francisco. It’s huge, packed with recognizable names and takes place in Golden Gate Park — our hippie version of Central Park. The list wasn’t quite as stellar as last year, but there were still plenty of talented groups on the list worth seeing. So, our benevolent editor Sylvia Adams booked my press credentials, and I was off to the show.
