With producer credits by Spike Jonze and Stephen Colbert, you’d think The 1 Second Film was a big-budget Hollywood production. On the contrary, the project is an experiment in new media and global collaboration. Filmmaker Nirvan Mullick intends to create a one-second film that contains 24 frames with a 9 x 5 foot painting corresponding to each frame. Hundreds of participants produce the paintings at a large party event, and the film is being entirely made with the help of volunteers. Anyone with a dollar can become associate producer, with top credits being allotted to those with bigger donations. Funds will go toward the production of a documentary that will run during hour-long credits. The paintings featured in the film will be auctioned off and all proceeds, along with profits from the final, will go toward the Global Fund for Women.
In the above video, Mullick convinces filmmakers Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman to donate and become producers of the film. If you’re interested, it’ll only take $12.01 to outbid the director of Where The Wild Things Are and Being John Malkovich. For $100, you can become executive producer.
The 1 Second Film is being overseen by the Collaboration Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit. Participants of The 1 Second Film will become founding members of the Collaboration Foundation, and can participate in future collaborative projects.
