The Future of Email?

You’ve probably been hearing about Google Wave for a bit now and wondered what all the fuss is about.  Well it looks like Google is up to no good once again, to create another platform that might be capable of stealing some of your time away from Twitter or Facebook.

The long of the short is this:

“Google Wave is an online tool for real-time communication and collaboration. A wave can be both a conversation and a document where people can discuss and work together using richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.” – straight from Google

In english, it’s like an email where people that gets updated in realtime by the people involved in it–like a virtual blackboard everyone has access to.  Why’s it so special?  One of the most important factors when it comes to sticky internet programs: “ease of use.”  Simon Beckerman did a superb job of explaining Google Wave in laymens terms on his Selectism.com column so instead of fumbling over my own interpretation I’ll let you read his easy to digest breakdown here.

It’s going to be interesting how Google Wave changes the landscape of internet communication.  Concocted by the same creative minds that brought you Google Maps, who knows how Wave will be assimilated into daily life for all of us who are finding ourselves increasingly and unequivocally internet dependent.
