Flashers Party in Venice

fpls-top

October was a month packed with design (this past week also being National Design Week — who comes up with this stuff anyway?). Adobe Max was easily the largest of these events. Some others include Mini Max (a mini version of Adobe Max). A documentary screening of Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight at Space15Twenty. A week long celebration of the 35th Anniversary of Hello Kitty at Royal/T. And LACMA’s From the Spoon to the City (where architects talk about their design process) — also next week.

Starting off the month though was FlashapaloozaStock IV, which set the stage for all the other events to live up to. It was a full day devoted to Flash, with a night of partying with like-minded people. The event, which has always been totally free, took place at Almer-Blank in Venice — the heart of Los Angeles’ Flash community.

Eye-wear for every season

mosley_tribes_2009_summer_fall_00

If you live in Southern California, then you are well aware of the sun-glass craze. Even when the sun peaks through a low haze, folks have their shades in tow. And as winter approaches, Angelenos will find any excuse to sport them with their look-of- the-day. Mosley Tribes, one of the leading lifestyle branding companies, is partly responsible for this eye-wear sensation.

Interview: Jay Holland

The Mulholland Way
Jay Holland isn’t the kind of guy most people would picture as a luggage and accessories designer. He’s confident, soft-spoken and unmistakably masculine. His clothes are stylish, but his appearance isn’t overly preened nor his shoes overly laced, or even laced at all on the day of our latest meeting. Yet, as the president of Mulholland, his family’s San Francisco-based business, Jay and his brother Guy, the company’s vice president, have their hands in every design decision, from the color of the zippers to the shape of the chairs.

Mister Cartoon Samsung R450

Mr. Cartoon

For years, Marc Machado aka “Mr. Cartoon” has been the favored tattoo artist for celebrity clients like Nas, Pharell Williams and Justin Timberlake. His fineline style, which has its origins in prison tattoo culture,  emphasizes negative space and intricate detail and is inspired by Los Angeles, lowrider culture and Latino art. His work demands high prices, but few other tattoo artists have as steady and masterful a hand as Mr. Cartoon.

Gregg Stone’s eerily beautiful multi-media paintings and ceramic skull designs have attracted many of today’s hottest artists ranging from graphic designers to tattoo artists to sculptors and fine artists to input their style of creativity to add to Stone’s unique art form. His multi-media paintings are inspired by his travels through the byways of border region Hispanic communities. He started producing ceramic skulls for an art project rendering El Qaeda and terrorist figures on a grouping of skulls and placed them in a pyramid format. He called the piece
