There is a Place

Picture 2Shizu Saldamando’s Solo Exhibition
Steve Turner Gallery – LA, CA
1/2/10

Steve Turner Contemporary is pleased to present There is a place…, an exhibition in its project room featuring new works by the Los Angeles based artist, Shizu Saldamando. Her show entitled, There is a Place is taken from a popular Morrissey song, “There is a Place in Hell for me and my Friends” and it documents Shizu Saldamando’s friends, who are also artists. In her work, Saldamando translates her snapshot photographs into drawings and paintings that depict her friends in social situations that she observes in bars, dance clubs, backyard parties and art galleries.

The Polar Bears Are Melting

Ice Sculpture in Kongens Nytory Square (Copenhagen, Denmark)

Lasting Impression of 2009
As we anticipate 2010 with all its unsettling uncertainties and the tenuous promises of fortune, I’d like to reflect on the past year during the eve of the New Year.  I chose this ice polar bear sculpture as the memorable image of 2009.  A bit of irony, to say the least, that the lasting image is a transitory piece of art that melted in front of the recent Copenhagen Conference.  Mark Coreth, a master sculptor of animals in motion

Flux Brings 2009 to a Colorful End

flux_mia

On December 17Th, Flux ended 2009 with what was arguably their best event yet in the Hammer screenings series. Given their impressive track record of well-crafted events, this was no mean task. Yet they managed to fill the evening with videos that were all enjoyable followed by equally as enjoyable presentations. With the night’s pièce de résistance being a live performance by Mia Doi Todd, accompanied by a band which included independent film maven Michel Gondry on drums.

Towers of Cascading Breasts

Ape School – “Wail To God”
Follow the trail of enigmata through the hallowed halls of Ape School Post-Secondary, past the frightening portrait of its inter-special provost, into the annals of the institution from which you first heard bellows of his “Wail To God”, and you’ll happen upon a deserted studio flickering the first teachings of Professor Michael Johnson, and his spiral into madness. The video, animated by Anthony F. Schepperd, casts a primitive and psychedelic lesson of the basest emotions

Dengue Fever New Year’s Bash

Picture 2Celebrate with The Fever!
The Mint – West LA, CA
12/31/09

Dance the year away and ring in 2010 with Dengue Fever at The Mint in Los Angeles!  LA’s favorite Cambodian psych-rock outfit will be performing a special set on New Year’s Eve.  This is Dengue’s first local club show since their record release party in April.  Since then, they’ve played the Hollywood Bowl, Sunset Junction and The Broad Stage.  There are (as of now) no other LA dates confirmed for 2010, so this will be a great chance to catch this electrifying band in an intimate setting for a special occasion!
