After a slight name change, Bristol duo “Malachai” is set to release their debut record Ugly Side of Love on February 2, 2010. Bristol is perhaps most famous for its trip-hop, D&B and graffiti art–Portishead and Banksy are examples of the city’s popular culture. Malachai members Gee and Tom stay true to their roots and offer an album inspired by hip-hop and movie samples (one from the 1979 cult film The Warriors), dubstep music and psychedelic garage rock (the Nuggets compilation are frequently invoked in descriptions of the band). Geoff Barrow of Portishead is a big fan of the band, enough so that he released Malachai’s record earlier this year on his Invada imprint. Ugly Side of Love sounds like a musical time warp of sorts, blending sixties psychedelia with eclectic breakbeats and samples.

“My generation grew up under a flag that had been hijacked by all the wrong people, but during my lifetime I’ve seen much to be proud of and it needs to be reclaimed,” says Gee. “England is The Beatles, The Kinks, Del boy and roast dinners but it’s also The Specials, Asian Dub Foundation, Desmonds, The Kumars and chicken tikka masala.”
