The MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House is proud to announce their first urban exhibition and definitely one of their most unique exhibitions, entitled How Many Billboards? Art In Stead. The exhibition debuts 23 new works by respected contemporary artists including Michael Asher, Daniel Joseph Martinez, Renée Green, Kori Newkirk, Allen Ruppersberg, James Welling, Yvonne Rainer and more. These artists have been commissioned to create a new work that critically responds to the medium of the billboard and interprets its role in the urban landscape. The exhibition explores art as an idea as well as a media for critical intervention and highlights the interaction of Pop, conceptualism and architecture in Los Angeles since the late 1960s. The exhibition looks at California’s conceptually-orientated art history and examines the relationships between outdoor media and architecture in the city, and also suggests in-depth consideration of participating artists’ broader contributions to contemporary art. Their artwork is simultaneously presented on billboards throughout Los Angeles for seven weeks from February 5th through March 26, 2010. The exhibition is organized by MAK Center Director Kimberli Meyer and co-curators Lisa Henry, Dr. Nizan Shaked, Dr. Gloria Sutton, and public art consultant Sara Daleiden. There will be an overview exhibition and orientation station at the Schindler House, which opens on February 23th as well as a series of public programs and bus tours. How Many Billboards? Art In Stead is supported by the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation Exhibition Award and additional funding has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs, the City of West Hollywood Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission, and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
