Top 10 Underground Tracks from Hong Kong

Time Out Hong Kong x Metal Postcard

My strongest impression of Hong Kong is colored by Wong Kar Wai movies and its culinary reputation, so needless to say I’m not surprised that the city boasts a lively music scene as well. Time Out Hong Kong and Metal Postcard Records (the label that brought you that strange London School of Economics video not long ago) present a podcast of 10 songs from the Hong Kong underground music scene. The playlist contains familiar western genres that bring to mind everyone from Aphex Twin to Belle & Sebastian.

Victory or Death

As the Wu-Tang Clan’s leader and producer, RZA aka Bobby Digital has  made himself a visible figure in the arts and entertainment industry, landing roles in films (American Gangster, Funny People) and producing soundtracks for Quentin Tarantino. He’s long been the group’s resident mystic and stylist, overseeing their production and aesthetic vision through his eclectic use of samples and gritty style of production. RZA’s latest self-mythologizing project involves the limited edition fine art collectible series Victory Or Death.

Q&A: Johnny Quach

6456_135732948759_662183759_3305622_7235218_n

EM:  Occupation and Position

QUACH: Creative Director at PRVCY Premium, a part time poker player, and I also start various projects not related to art or fashion.

EM:  What neighborhood do you closely identify with?

Over the last four years I’ve lived in Alhambra for the Chinese food, Silverlake for the interesting entrepreneurship, and Downtown LA for the faster pace of lifestyle.  After months of searching I decided to purchase a loft in downtown.  Downtown is unique in the way it houses designers & businessmen.  This leads to a lot of interesting relationships that don’t happen in other cities.  It’s smaller then most cities so it’s very pedestrian-friendly.  I really believe the more people walk, the prouder they are of their neighborhood.

Tour Spiel: Cymbals Eat Guitars

cymbals

Inspired by the Minutemen song, Evil Monito’s “Tour Spiel” provides an intimate look into the musician’s tumultuous life on the road. Each week, we’ll check in with some of our favorite artists touring stateside or abroad and find out what it’s like to be packed in a van or waiting at the baggage claim for hours on end.  It’s ultimately the memorable experiences with friends that make life on the road rewarding, or at the very least interesting.  This week it’s the noise-pop guitarist  Matthew Whipple from Cymbals Eat Guitars who reveals the ‘randomness’ presented while on the open road, including the following necessities to keep the body (and mind) hydrated on tour: porn, dietary supplements and a good hobby.
