You know the feeling very well. There are those of us with high athletic aspirations, the ones who can run the mile under six minutes, play every intramural sport with some proficiency and participate in some healthy, lifelong exercise that keeps you fit and feeling good. And there are the rest of us who, for one reason or another, heave and strain with every physical exertion — the air ball toward the basket, the incomplete catch on the fourth down or the last sprint through the final lap as you feel the burn of your oxygen-depleted muscles. This is a fact of life that is sometimes cruelly represented in the physical education classes of most high schools. There are champion jocks and journeymen who will forever remind us that we may never live up to anyone’s athletic aspirations.
That’s alright, according to The Drums in their video for “I Felt Stupid,” because they make music for people like you and me. Their music is influenced by pasty, unathletic bands like The Wake and The Smiths, and “I Felt Stupid” captures that sense of teenage angst and frustration toward athletic oneupsmanship. Shot in vintage B&W and featuring jangly synths, The Drums’ video leans heavily on an eighties aesthetic, but the sentiments of their song are most likely timeless and universal.
With their love for fifties pop songs and eighties instrumentals, members of The Drums have been making headlines in music journals and websites across the U.S. and U.K. They are set to begin their European tour on Jan. 27 at Dingwalls of London. Click here for the full schedule of tour dates.
