Jesco Night

JESCO NIGHT: White Lightnin’ + Dancing Outlaw
The Cinefamily – Los Angeles, CA
1/19/10

Ray White, his dear ol’ pa and one of the most famous “mountain dancers” of the 20th century. We present a pairing of the brand-new Jesco biopic White Lightnin’ with the doc that started it all, Dancing Outlaw.

Kenna Zemedkun‘s father lost a brother to water-borne illness as a child in his native Ethiopia, the memory of which invokes the 3,900 children who die everyday from water diseases as a result of inadequate sanitation (WHO 2004). Growing industrialization and populations tap into what resources and infrastructure the planet has with frightening speed. As many as 1.1 billion people in the world lack access to clean drinking water. The deadliness of unsafe water is what Americans briefly experienced during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, demonstrating that the water crisis is not just a third-world problem.

Alex Trebeck says so…

You know you’ve made it when you are an answer on JEOPARDY!, as Dengue Fever was January 4.  What a way to kick off 2010!  2009 was certainly not a lean year for Dengue Fever. They made their live debut in Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Luxemborg and Turkey (while other places around the world clamored for – and got – their return); wrote and performed to standing ovations a new soundtrack for the 1925 silent film classic The Lost World

“Not Enough”

Xylos
Xylos – “Not Enough”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

New York’s Xylos is reminiscent of the dreamy vocals and tropical rhythms of Sweden’s jj, who were last year’s breakthrough hit with their first full-length jj n° 2. The boys and girls of Xylos are less mysterious and media-shy, having been featured on MTV and scheduled for a show with Atlas Sound in February. Their debut record, produced by Britt Meyers (Yeasayer) is set out to come out early this year. Check out “Not Enough,” which pairs boy-girl vocals and innuendo to great effect. It’s catchy and romantic without being too cute.

Surfer Blood

None of the members of Surfer Blood actually surf, but they certainly know how to write some great pop hooks. Hailing from Palm Beach, FL, the five-piece band of twenty-somethings recorded their debut album in a college dorm, taking inspiration from Afropop, grunge and surf rock.

Alex Angi

Recyclable Art
galerie Magda Danysz- Paris, France
01/09/10

The colored dynamism in Alex Angi’s work seems close to that of pop-art. He uses recycled materials that he transforms into surprising art objects. In this way, he has become a ‘gold digger.’ From public trash, Angi recovers plastic and industrial materials to create his art, with the help of a custom-built technique. The recycling and accumulation of materials offers a new artistic expression and confirms Alex Angi’s commitment to nature. He is determined to defend the planet, not only by the language but also with his art.
