The Cinefamily – Los Angeles, CA
Live Review: 1/16/10
It’s no secret that Edan is well-versed in hip-hop history, but imagine seeing him in-person with photographer Ricky Powell, who’s no stranger to some of the culture’s most seminal moments. This past Saturday, Edan and Powell, fresh off a U.K. tour, stopped by The Cinefamily for a special premiere event for “Echo Party,” a found film mix to the DJ’s latest record. →

You know the feeling very well. There are those of us with high athletic aspirations, the ones who can run the mile under six minutes, play every intramural sport with some proficiency and participate in some healthy, lifelong exercise that keeps you fit and feeling good. And there are the rest of us who, for one reason or another, heave and strain with every physical exertion →
Charles Seliger (1926-2009): A Memorial Exhibition
Michael Rosenfeld Gallery – New York, NY
1/9/10 to 2/27/10
Abstract Expressionism is often associated with figures like Jackson Pollock, whose large-scale paintings often express a violent and masculine approach to painting. Charles Seliger, the late painter who passed away last October, belonged to the same movement of painters like Pollock and Willem de Kooning, but he had a decidedly different sensibility. →

Design Opinion
Last week I used the MacBook Pro as an example of greenwashing with a spoonful of sugar, so while on the subject I just couldn’t move on without discussing the current king of the eco-castle.
Right now I’m thinking of a car company. In 1973 they became the first automobile manufacturer in the world to introduce an environmental officer. They plan to reduce resource consumption and manufacturing emissions by 30% →

By now, everyone has heard of the devastating earthquake in Haiti and Oxfam wants to help. Oxfam has four offices in Haiti and over 200 aid workers already on the ground in Haiti and are coordinating relief efforts as well. After the initial earthquake struck just before sundown, as many as 28 powerful aftershocks continued throughout the night and at that point, the darkness didn’t help make initial recovery efforts any easier. More than 2 million people have been affected by this earthquake and the human toll is still unknown but Haiti’s president estimates the number to be in the thousands. Haiti is already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere where 85% of people live in poverty. This disaster has already had an extreme impact and conditions are expected to worsen, especially within the next 24 hours. Help save a life and donate now to Oxfam’s Haiti →
Cinefamily presents One Too Many Mornings, a film that embodies a unique hybrid of fratboy-esque raunch and Cassavetes-style naturalism. Sound like your kind of movie? It’s fresh from its premiere at the 2010 Sundance fest, and is a coming-of-age comedy about two dudes who are way too old to be coming of age. Fischer, a twentysomething layabout who lives for free in a Pacific Palisades church, is surprised to find estranged childhood friend Peter, who’s run away from a longtime girlfriend, on his doorstep. As the boys drink, party and waste their days away, Fischer turns a blind eye to Peter’s growing depression — until Peter’s girlfriend →
Outpost is proud to host two presentations of Berlin-based artist, Ute Waldhausen and local artist/designer, Bettina Hubby. Who are these artists? Walhausen is currently in Los Angeles on a DAAD grant until May developing a new project entitled Karton Vivant. Karton Vivant experiments with re-appropriated technologies by turning a variety of common food product cartons into kinetic performers, allowing them to fall, slip, rotate, and bounce. They hit the walls of rooms, other obstacles and each other. Apparently, this is what happens when you have fun with food products. Waldhausen is an artist-in-residence with Fringe, a program that works the projects →
Strong Arm Steady
Stones Throw
(2010)
Has it really been that long? In the nineties, Death Row Records was building a musical empire, a roster full of heavy-hitters like Dr. Dre, 2pac, Snoop Dogg and Warren G. One should be reluctant, however, to call it a Golden Age of West Coast hip-hop. Sure, the label hailed in the era of G-funk, thug life and fuck-all attitudes →
