The Bloggomist: Acorn & Oak Tree
Culture Opinion
As every tech company seems to be releasing tablet e-readers, nearly every publishing giant cuts down on both their staffs and titles, and even seasoned media vets move online, I suppose it should be pretty apparent that the newer, democratically conceived voices undercutting established ones are, indeed, undeniably potent. →
Inspired by the Minutemen song, Evil Monito’s “Tour Spiel” highlights the musician’s life on the road. Each week, we’ll check in with some of our favorite artists touring stateside or abroad. We’ll provide an intimate look into what it’s like to be packed in a van or waiting for a flight with the same people for hours on end. It takes a certain state of mind to survive any lengthy tour. Yet it’s the memorable experiences that make life on the road ultimately rewarding, if not interesting. This week we highlight the Khmer psych band, Dengue Fever who braved a strange cult commune in Sedona and food poisoning in Cambodia in their quest to bring a unique brand of rock to the world music circuit. →

CSA California needs your help.
CSA’s organic produce program has been growing strong for the last year and they are ready to take it to the next level. However, they are lacking the necessary funds to purchase a cargo van and invest in additional marketing materials like banners, signs, etc. The van will cost around $4000 for a used model. Even if you can only donate $10 or $20, it will help them reach their goal. →
Mark Jenkins
Carmichael Gallery-Hollywood, CA
01/21/09
In January 2010, Carmichael Gallery presents Meaning Is Overrated, a solo exhibition of new hyper realistic conceptual works and site-specific installation pieces by Mark Jenkins that reconsider the aesthetic and practical qualities of the human body. Works range from those in which the human is recast as a specialized object, such as Spokes, which features a tape cast sculpture of a girl fashioned to function as a bike, to those in which human posture is contorted to resemble that of another animal. Each piece is “an exploration of evolution within the realm of the absurd,” says Jenkins. →
This latest video from OK Go features the band dressed in uniform, performing alongside the Notre Dame marching band. They walk across an autumnal grass field, where swamp things in camouflage emerge with trumpets and tubas. “This Too Shall Pass” is off of the band’s latest record, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky. The title comes from the album’s concept, which is based on an obscure, pseudo-scientific book from 1876 called The Influence of the Blue Ray of the Sunlight and of the Blue Colour of the Sky, reportedly written by a Union army officer, Alfred Pleasonton. The colorfully tripped-out album cover apparently has something to do with the book. Read more about it here. →
