I’d like to say that when done correctly, lo-fi recordings can be a thing of beauty. Then again, is there a right way to produce a lo-fi album? Working out of his Brooklyn apartment, Wisconsin transplant Sebastian Krueger’s new Inlets album, Inter Arbiter, created a 37-minute lo-fi triumph. With the help from the likes of Angel Deradoorian, Zach Condon and Maria Jeffers, Kruger’s haunting vocals are accompanied by deep layers of musical complexity in a Kings of Convenience-meets-Sufjan Stevens sort of way. Lead track “[]” does nothing more than set the tone for the rest of the album with its spacey gloom. “Great Exit Lights” and “Maspeth” show why he manned the banjo for Feist’s SNL performance. Single “Bright Orange Air” best exemplifies Krueger’s ability as a composer with its big, bold build-ups in-between simple, delicate portions of the song. If anything, a good lo-fi recording is one with character, and plenty of character is what Inter Arbiter contains. Inter Arbiter comes out April 20th, 2010.
